Brampton West

Brampton West covers the western reaches of the City of Brampton, extending from Hurontario Street toward the Halton Hills border and from the city's southern boundary north to Bovaird Drive. The riding takes in the neighbourhoods of Heart Lake and Snelgrove, along with newer subdivisions that have pushed westward toward Mississauga Road. Much of the landscape was developed from the 1990s onward, characterized by curving residential streets, community parks, and strip-mall plazas interspersed with remaining greenfield sites.

Candidates

Kamal Khera (Liberal) — Born in Delhi in 1989 and raised in Brampton, Khera earned an Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing from York University and worked as a registered nurse in the palliative and oncology units at St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto. Elected in 2015 as the youngest Liberal MP in the House of Commons, she served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and later to the Minister of National Revenue during her first term.

Murarilal Thapliyal (Conservative) — A managing partner at Thapliyal and Rai Law Firm in Brampton, Thapliyal immigrated to Canada and started his law practice in 2007. He lived in the riding with his wife and two sons and was involved with numerous volunteering groups and cultural associations across the Greater Toronto Area.

Navjit Kaur (NDP) — A community Registered Respiratory Therapist born and raised in Brampton, Kaur was a healthcare provider who lived in the riding with her husband and two children. She campaigned on universal pharmacare, affordable housing, and climate action.

Jane Davidson (Green Party) — A communications professional and writer, Davidson had worked as an award-winning communications specialist with Du Pont Canada and as a staff reporter for the Anglican Journal of Canada before serving as Campaign Director for the United Way.

Roger Sampson (People's Party) — Sampson ran as the People's Party candidate in the riding.

Paul Tannahill (Christian Heritage Party), Harinderpal Hundal (Communist), and Anjum Malik (Canada's Fourth Front) also stood as candidates.

About the Riding

Brampton West is among the fastest-growing constituencies in Ontario, with one of the highest average numbers of children per household in the province. The riding's electorate skews younger than the Ontario average, driven by family-oriented immigration and new homeownership. The population is predominantly South Asian, with Punjabi, Gujarati, and other diasporic communities forming a majority. Many residents work in the transportation and warehousing sectors clustered around nearby Toronto Pearson International Airport, while others commute across the GTA.

Healthcare access was a central campaign issue in 2019, mirroring the broader Brampton crisis of overcrowded emergency departments and insufficient hospital beds. Transit investment, affordable housing, and support for small businesses — many of which are first-generation immigrant enterprises in the retail and service sectors — also ranked high among local concerns. Community life in Brampton West is anchored by gurdwaras, mandirs, mosques, and churches, as well as a network of cultural and sports organizations. The Heart Lake Conservation Area provides one of the riding's few large green spaces.
