Brampton South

Brampton South sits in the southeastern portion of the City of Brampton within Peel Region, a fast-expanding suburban landscape where new housing subdivisions have steadily replaced former agricultural land over the past two decades. The riding is bisected by Highway 410 and bordered roughly by Bovaird Drive to the north and Steeles Avenue to the south, placing it squarely within the commuter belt that feeds employment centres in Toronto and Mississauga. GO Transit and Brampton's Zum rapid bus service connect the riding to the broader Greater Toronto Area.

Candidates

Sonia Sidhu (Liberal) — The incumbent MP, Sidhu immigrated to Canada from India in 1992 and settled in Brampton after initially living in Winnipeg. She spent more than eighteen years working in healthcare, serving as a diabetes educator and cardiac technologist at Victoria Hospital. First elected in 2015, she served on the Standing Committee on Health and chaired the All-Party Diabetes Caucus during her first term in Parliament.

Ramandeep Brar (Conservative) — Brar holds a Ph.D. in Food Science and Technology and owns Olympian Group Systems Inc., a transportation-sector company he had operated in Brampton for more than fifteen years. A former competitive athlete, he captured a silver medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Championships in Malaysia and served as President of Field Hockey Ontario.

Mandeep Kaur (NDP) — A mortgage specialist and community volunteer in Brampton, Kaur was active with the Seva Food Bank and various local charity organizations. She campaigned on universal pharmacare, affordable housing, and climate action alongside NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh.

Karen Fraser (Green Party) — A retired administrative professional who had served as CEO of the Niagara Falls Green Party Association since 2005, Fraser brought experience from previous provincial campaigns with the Green Party of Ontario in 2014 and 2018.

Rajwinder Ghuman (People's Party) — Ghuman carried the People's Party banner in the riding, offering a libertarian-leaning alternative to the major parties.

Wavey Mercer (Christian Heritage Party), Mitesh Joshi (Canada's Fourth Front), and Dagmar Sullivan (Marxist-Leninist) also appeared on the ballot.

About the Riding

Brampton South reflects the dramatic demographic transformation of the outer suburbs northwest of Toronto. The riding's population is remarkably diverse, with a large South Asian community and significant representation from other communities around the world. Punjabi, Gujarati, Urdu, and Hindi are widely spoken alongside English. The local economy revolves around logistics, warehousing, and light manufacturing along the Highway 410 corridor, while Toronto Pearson International Airport is a major employer for area residents.

Healthcare capacity was a dominant local concern heading into 2019. Brampton's hospital system ranked among the lowest-funded per capita in Ontario, and the campaign for a second full-service hospital united residents across political lines. Transit investment to keep pace with population growth, affordable housing in a market increasingly stretched by GTA-wide price pressures, and support for immigrant-owned small businesses along the Queen Street and Steeles Avenue corridors also featured prominently in the campaign.
