Barrie South--Innisfil is a federal riding in central Ontario that encompasses the southern portion of the city of Barrie and the town of Innisfil to its south and southeast. Situated on the western shore of Lake Simcoe roughly 100 kilometres north of Toronto, the riding is part of one of Ontario's fastest-growing urban corridors. Rapid suburban development over the past two decades has transformed former agricultural land into housing subdivisions, and the population continues to surge as residents seek more affordable housing options than those available in the Greater Toronto Area. The Conservative Party has held the riding since its creation in 2015.
Candidates
John Brassard (Conservative) won his fourth consecutive federal election. Before entering politics, Brassard spent 30 years as a professional firefighter and served as an executive member of the Markham Professional Firefighters' Association, where he gained extensive experience in labour relations. He also served as a Barrie city councillor. First elected to Parliament in 2015, Brassard held significant roles within the Conservative caucus, including Opposition House Leader and chair of the Standing Committee on Ethics.
John Olthuis (Liberal) is a retired communications and marketing professional with over 30 years of experience at Alectra Utilities. A longtime Barrie resident, father of five, and grandfather of two, Olthuis previously ran for Barrie city council in 2018 and for the provincial Liberals in Barrie--Innisfil in 2022. His campaign priorities centred on affordability, housing construction, and a transcontinental electrical grid.
Andrew Harrigan (NDP) is a child protection worker with the York Region Children's Aid Society and the president of OPSEU Local 304. A resident of Alcona in Innisfil, Harrigan ran for Innisfil town council in 2022 and for the provincial NDP in the February 2025 Ontario election before entering the federal race.
Mark Sampson (People's Party - PPC) ran for the People's Party of Canada.
About the Riding
Barrie South--Innisfil sits at the intersection of rapid suburban expansion and persistent infrastructure strain. The city of Barrie has grown substantially, driven by an influx of GTA commuters drawn by comparatively lower housing costs and the GO Transit rail connection to Toronto's Union Station. Innisfil, to the south, has similarly experienced a population boom, including a pioneering partnership with ride-hailing services to address gaps in local transit.
The local economy rests on a combination of retail, services, construction, and a growing logistics sector, with several distribution centres established along the Highway 400 corridor. Healthcare is a significant employer, with the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre serving as Barrie's primary hospital, though capacity concerns have been a longstanding issue as the population outpaces medical infrastructure.
In the 2025 campaign, affordability and housing dominated the conversation. Despite being more affordable than Toronto, Barrie and Innisfil saw home prices climb sharply in recent years, and rental supply struggled to keep pace with demand. US tariff threats added economic uncertainty, particularly for workers in manufacturing and distribution. The campaign in the riding was framed as a two-person contest between the two Johns, with Brassard emphasizing his parliamentary experience and Olthuis positioning the Liberals as the stronger party to manage Canada-US trade relations.
