Aurora--Oak Ridges--Richmond Hill

Aurora--Oak Ridges--Richmond Hill is a federal riding in York Region, north of Toronto, spanning the town of Aurora, the northern half of the city of Richmond Hill, and the Oak Ridges Moraine corridor between them. The riding sits squarely in the 905 suburban belt, with a population of approximately 117,750 as of the 2021 census. It is a diverse, largely middle- to upper-middle-income constituency with significant Chinese, South Asian, and Iranian-Canadian communities. The seat was won by Liberal Leah Taylor Roy in 2021 but flipped to the Conservatives in 2025.

Candidates

Costas Menegakis (Conservative) reclaimed a seat in Parliament after a decade away. A proud Canadian of Greek heritage, Menegakis is the founder and CEO of Tilwood Inc., a product fulfillment and logistics company. He previously served as the MP for Richmond Hill from 2011 to 2015, during which time he was parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. After losing his seat in 2015, he ran unsuccessfully in Richmond Hill in 2019 and 2021 before winning the restructured Aurora--Oak Ridges--Richmond Hill riding in 2025.

Leah Taylor Roy (Liberal) was the incumbent, first elected in 2021. Born in Newmarket, Ontario, Taylor Roy holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto and a Master of Public Policy from Harvard University. Before entering politics, she worked at the World Bank, as a consultant with McKinsey and Company, and in a family-owned green-energy business. A mother of six in a blended family, she focused her campaign on affordability and environmental policy.

Danielle Maniuk (NDP) is the president of the Sarnia--Lambton--Bkejwanong NDP Electoral District Association. She described herself as deeply rooted in local organizing and community groups, including work on anti-racism, diversity, and inclusion committees.

Tom Muench (Green Party) stood as the Green candidate.

Igor Tvorogov (People's Party - PPC) ran for the People's Party of Canada.

About the Riding

Aurora--Oak Ridges--Richmond Hill sits atop the Oak Ridges Moraine, a geologically significant glacial ridge that serves as a critical groundwater recharge area for southern Ontario. Development pressures on the Moraine have been a recurring local concern for decades, pitting growth demands against environmental protection. The riding is largely suburban and residential, with residents commuting into Toronto via Highway 404, the GO Transit rail line, or local transit connections.

The economy in this part of York Region is driven by small and medium-sized businesses, professional services, and a significant retail sector. Aurora's historic downtown and Richmond Hill's commercial corridors support local commerce, while proximity to Toronto draws many residents into the city's broader labour market.

In the 2025 campaign, tariffs and the economy dominated public forums, with voters expressing concern about the impact of US trade tensions on Canadian jobs and household costs. Housing affordability was another pressing issue, as property prices in York Region climbed to levels that locked out many younger residents. Local debates around public safety, property crime, and the adequacy of health-care services rounded out a campaign in which the riding's shift from Liberal to Conservative reflected a broader suburban trend across the GTA.
