Barrie--Springwater--Oro-Medonte covers the northern portion of the city of Barrie and the surrounding rural townships of Springwater and Oro-Medonte in Simcoe County. The riding blends Barrie's growing urban fringe with agricultural land, lake country, and small-town communities. Oro-Medonte includes the shores of Lake Simcoe and the popular resort area around Lake Couchiching, while Springwater encompasses fertile farmland and the communities of Midhurst, Elmvale, and Minesing. The riding has been held by Conservative Doug Shipley since 2019.
Candidates
Doug Shipley (Conservative) won his third consecutive federal election. A longtime Barrie resident who has lived in the riding for over 20 years, Shipley served three terms as a Barrie city councillor before being elected to Parliament in 2019. He and his wife Lisa raised their two sons in the community.
Rose Zacharias (Liberal) is a physician with more than 20 years of experience practising medicine in the Barrie, Springwater, and Oro-Medonte communities. She served as president of the Ontario Medical Association and focused her campaign heavily on healthcare, noting that over 55,000 residents in Barrie alone lacked a family doctor. Zacharias also ran as the provincial Liberal candidate in Barrie--Springwater--Oro-Medonte in the February 2025 Ontario election before entering the federal race.
Gabriela Trujillo (NDP) ran as the New Democratic Party candidate.
Greg Taylor (Green Party) stood as the Green Party candidate.
Michael Speers (Communist) ran for the Communist Party of Canada.
About the Riding
Barrie--Springwater--Oro-Medonte captures the tension between urban growth and rural preservation that defines much of Simcoe County. The northern parts of Barrie within the riding have seen extensive residential development, with new subdivisions spreading outward from the city's historic core. Springwater Township, meanwhile, has been at the centre of contentious boundary discussions with Barrie over land annexation and servicing agreements, as the city seeks room to expand while the township and Simcoe County work to protect their planning autonomy and tax base.
Agriculture remains an important part of the economy in the rural portions of the riding, with mixed farming, dairy operations, and cash crops prevalent across Springwater and Oro-Medonte. The resort and cottage economy around Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching contributes seasonal tourism revenue, though water quality in Lake Simcoe has been a recurring environmental concern.
Healthcare emerged as a central issue in the 2025 campaign, given the severe family-doctor shortage across the region. Housing affordability, infrastructure to support population growth, and the economic uncertainty created by US tariff threats also shaped the race. The contest between Shipley and Zacharias highlighted the riding's mix of Conservative-leaning suburban and rural voters and a Liberal campaign built around the physician shortage.
