Pontiac

Sprawling across the western reaches of Quebec from the Ottawa River deep into the Canadian Shield, Pontiac ranks among the province's most expansive federal ridings. The district takes in the regional county municipalities of Pontiac, Les Collines-de-l'Outaouais, and La Vallee-de-la-Gatineau, along with portions of the city of Gatineau, connecting suburban communities near the national capital to remote northern villages.

Candidates

William Amos (Liberal) — The incumbent MP since 2015, Amos built his career in environmental law before entering politics. A graduate of McGill University's civil law and common law programs, he served as director of the University of Ottawa-Ecojustice Environmental Law Clinic, where he provided legal counsel on mining regulation and natural resource protection. Earlier in his career he had worked in the Prime Minister's Office under Jean Chretien and advised Cabinet minister David Anderson on species-at-risk policy.

Dave Blackburn (Conservative) — A former member of the Canadian Armed Forces who had served as a social work officer, Blackburn was a professor at the Universite du Quebec en Outaouais in the social work department. He launched his campaign at the Little Red Wagon Winery in Clarendon in September 2019, positioning himself as an advocate for the riding's rural communities.

Jonathan Carreiro-Benoit (Bloc Quebecois) — Carreiro-Benoit carried the Bloc Quebecois banner in a riding where the party had historically struggled to gain traction, campaigning on Quebec sovereignty issues and the party's renewed platform under Yves-Francois Blanchet.

Denise Giroux (NDP) — A lawyer and labour relations officer who spent her career working with one of the largest unions in the federal public service, Giroux brought experience in workplace advocacy and public-sector policy to the NDP campaign in the riding.

Claude Bertrand (Green Party) — Bertrand represented the Green Party in the contest.

Mario Belec (People's Party), Shawn Stewart (VCP), and Louis Lang (ML) also stood as candidates.

About the Riding

Pontiac's geography is defined by the Canadian Shield, with productive farmland limited to narrow corridors along the Ottawa and Gatineau rivers. For generations, forestry sustained communities like Fort-Coulonge, Shawville, and Maniwaki, but the closure of major mills in the late 2000s left lasting economic scars. The riding also encompasses Gatineau Park and the Gatineau Hills, where Chelsea and Wakefield attract seasonal tourism and outdoor recreation. Many residents in the southern portions commute to Ottawa or Gatineau for work, creating a sharp divide between suburban and deeply rural realities. Federal issues in 2019 centred on broadband internet access for remote communities, forestry-sector support, health-care availability in smaller towns, and infrastructure investment for aging roads and bridges spread across a vast territory.
