Gatineau

Located on the north bank of the Ottawa River directly opposite the national capital, the riding of Gatineau corresponds roughly to the territory of the pre-amalgamation city of Gatineau within the larger municipality created in 2002. The district covers suburban residential neighbourhoods, commercial corridors, and green spaces in the heart of the Outaouais region, where the federal public service is the dominant employer and daily life is closely linked to government offices on both sides of the river.

Candidates

Steven MacKinnon (Liberal) — The incumbent MP first elected in 2015, MacKinnon was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and studied business at the Universite de Moncton and Queen's University. Before entering Parliament, he served as an advisor to New Brunswick Premier Frank McKenna and later worked as senior vice-president at a global public affairs consultancy, leading teams in financial communications and mergers.

Genevieve Nadeau (Bloc Quebecois) — Pursuing a master's degree at the Ecole nationale d'administration publique, Nadeau had taught mathematics at Polyvalente Nicolas-Gatineau and worked as an educator at Centres Jeunesse de l'Outaouais. She was a longtime independence movement activist and had served as co-spokesperson for the Outaouais branch of the Stop Oleoduc movement opposing the Energy East pipeline.

Eric Chaurette (NDP) — Chaurette held a background in geography and a master's degree in environmental studies, and had worked domestically and internationally on sustainable food and agriculture projects.

Sylvie Goneau (Conservative) — A former municipal councillor for the Bellevue district of Gatineau from 2009 to 2017, Goneau had also worked for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. She was officially nominated as the Conservative candidate following an investiture in April 2019.

Guy Dostaler (Green Party) — Dostaler carried the Green Party banner in a riding where environmental policy and interprovincial transit links were prominent local concerns.

Mario-Roberto Lam ran for the People's Party and Pierre Soubliere for the Marxist-Leninist Party.

About the Riding

Gatineau's economy is dominated by the federal public service, with thousands of residents commuting to departments and agencies on both sides of the Ottawa River. The Place du Portage complex and other government office towers sit just outside the riding's boundaries in neighbouring Hull. Beyond government employment, the district includes retail corridors, light industry, and a growing technology sector. Federal issues in the campaign included the proposed interprovincial light rail transit link between Gatineau and Ottawa, official bilingualism, and pay system problems affecting public servants. Housing affordability was an emerging concern as the Ottawa-Gatineau real estate market tightened in the years before the election.
