Situated on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River, the riding of Hull--Aylmer takes in most of the former city of Aylmer and all of the former city of Hull, both amalgamated into the city of Gatineau in 2002. The Gatineau River forms the riding's eastern boundary. With its mix of government office towers in the Hull sector and leafy residential streets in Aylmer, the district is compact and urban, and many of its residents commute to federal workplaces on both sides of the river.
Candidates
Greg Fergus (Liberal) — First elected in 2015, Fergus had worked extensively within the Liberal Party of Canada before entering Parliament, including a period as national director of the party. He earned degrees from the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. As a teenager, he subscribed to Hansard and later served as a parliamentary page in 1988.
Joanie Riopel (Bloc Quebecois) — Riopel campaigned on issues including federal funding for the proposed Gatineau light rail transit project and the need for supervised injection sites in the Outaouais. She argued that Ottawa had delayed transit investment in the region while prioritizing projects elsewhere.
Nicolas Thibodeau (NDP) — Thibodeau had worked in green architecture and on Parliament Hill as a parliamentary assistant to NDP MPs. His campaign priorities included affordable housing and corporate tax fairness.
Mike Duggan (Conservative) — Duggan represented the Conservative Party in a riding where the federal public service workforce tends to favour the Liberal Party.
Josee Poirier Defoy (Green Party) — Poirier Defoy carried the Green banner in a riding where environmental policy and sustainable urban planning were relevant campaign themes.
Rowen Tanguay ran for the People's Party, Sebastien Grenier for the Parti Rhinoceros Party, and Alexandre Deschenes for the Marxist-Leninist Party.
About the Riding
The federal government is the overwhelming economic engine in Hull--Aylmer. The Place du Portage complex, several federal department headquarters, and the Canadian Museum of History are all located in or near the riding. Aylmer, set along the shores of Lac Deschenes, offers a quieter residential character with parks, marinas, and heritage buildings. Key federal issues during the campaign included the Phoenix pay system's continuing impact on public servants, the proposed interprovincial tramway linking Gatineau to Ottawa's Confederation Line, bilingualism in federal services, and the state of infrastructure in the Hull sector. The riding's proximity to the national capital gives questions of public service employment, language rights, and government spending a particularly immediate character.
