Battle River—Crowfoot

One of Alberta's largest rural ridings by area, Battle River—Crowfoot spans the eastern half of central Alberta from roughly 40 kilometres outside Edmonton's southeastern limits down to within 35 kilometres of Calgary's northeastern edge. The riding covers approximately 52,600 square kilometres of prairie, parkland, and badlands, with Camrose as its largest city and Drumheller, Wainwright, Stettler, and Three Hills among its notable towns.

Candidates

Kevin Sorenson (Conservative) — First elected in 2000 in the former Crowfoot riding as a Canadian Alliance candidate, Sorenson had represented the area through five consecutive elections. He served as Minister of State for Finance under Prime Minister Stephen Harper from July 2013 onward, and had previously held roles as Opposition critic to the Solicitor General and deputy critic for Justice. He was based in the community of Killam in Flagstaff County.

Andy Kowalski (Liberal) — Kowalski ran the Liberal campaign in a riding where the party historically drew minimal support, facing an incumbent with deep roots in the community.

Katherine Swampy (NDP) — Swampy represented the NDP in a riding where the party aimed to present an alternative platform to voters in the predominantly conservative region.

Gary Kelly (Green Party) — Kelly carried the Green Party banner, emphasizing environmental issues in a riding with significant agricultural and energy sector activity.

About the Riding

Battle River—Crowfoot encompasses a diverse rural economy. Camrose, with a population approaching 19,000, serves as a regional centre for agriculture, education, and health care, hosting the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta. Drumheller, nestled in the Red Deer River valley, is home to the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology, one of Canada's premier dinosaur fossil museums and a significant tourist draw. The town of Wainwright hosts Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, one of the Canadian military's largest training facilities, which serves as a major local employer. Agriculture dominates the riding's landscape, with grain farming, cattle ranching, and mixed farming operations spread across the parkland belt. Oil and gas extraction, particularly conventional wells and small-scale operations, supplements the agricultural economy throughout the riding. The 2014–2015 oil price downturn placed additional strain on communities that depended on energy-sector employment. The riding's territory stretches from the Battle River in the north to the badlands along the Red Deer River in the south, a landscape that has returned solidly conservative results in federal elections since the 1930s.
