Calgary Skyview

Calgary Skyview covers the city's far northeast, carved from the former Calgary Northeast riding through the 2012 redistribution. The riding stretches from the established communities of Castleridge and Falconridge, built in the 1980s, northward through Taradale and Saddle Ridge to the brand-new subdivisions of Skyview Ranch and Redstone at the city's northern edge. Proximity to Calgary International Airport shapes the area's noise environment and employment patterns, with airport-related logistics and service jobs supplementing the oil-and-gas and retail sectors.

Candidates

Darshan Singh Kang (Liberal) — A former Alberta Liberal MLA for Calgary-McCall from 2008 to 2015, Kang worked as a welder and later as a real estate agent before entering politics. Acclaimed as the Liberal candidate in June 2014, he sought to become the first Liberal elected in a Calgary riding since 1968.

Devinder Shory (Conservative) — The incumbent MP for the predecessor riding of Calgary Northeast since 2008, Shory was born in Punjab, India, and earned law degrees from Punjabi University before immigrating to Canada. He was called to the Alberta bar in 1998 and operated a general law practice in Calgary's northeast.

Sahajvir Singh (NDP) — A member of a Calgary Police advisory board, Singh had volunteered as a local youth group leader for over 15 years in northeast Calgary communities.

Najeeb Butt (PC Party) — Butt ran under the Progressive Canadian Party banner in the eight-candidate field.

Ed Reddy (Green Party) — Reddy represented the Green Party in Calgary Skyview.

Also on the ballot were Stephen Garvey (Democratic Advancement), Joseph Young (Independent), and Daniel Blanchard (Marxist-Leninist).

About the Riding

Calgary Skyview is defined by successive waves of suburban development moving north from the 1980s through the 2010s. Older communities like Castleridge, Falconridge, and Pineridge were among Calgary's first northeast suburbs and by 2015 featured aging commercial strips and walk-up apartment complexes alongside single-family homes. Taradale and Saddle Ridge, developed from the early 2000s, grew rapidly and became home to large Sikh gurdwaras, Islamic centres, and evangelical churches that anchored the area's cultural life. Skyview Ranch and Redstone, the riding's newest subdivisions, offered starter homes and townhouses that attracted young immigrant families. The riding's commercial life centres on the Marlborough and Sunridge malls on its southern fringe and the Prairie Winds Park recreational complex. The Northeast CTrain line, extended to Saddletowne station in 2012, provided the riding's sole rapid-transit link to downtown, and further transit expansion was a persistent local demand. In 2015, affordable housing, settlement services for newcomers, and the economic fallout from the oil-price downturn were dominant campaign issues. The race between Kang and Shory was closely watched as a test of whether the Liberal wave sweeping central Canada could breach Calgary's longstanding Conservative dominance.
