Bow River

Recreated in the 2012 redistribution from portions of several former ridings, Bow River sweeps across southern Alberta east of Calgary, taking in the towns of Strathmore, Brooks, Vulcan, Taber, and Vauxhall. The riding extends from the edge of the Calgary metropolitan area through irrigated farmland and cattle country to the semi-arid grasslands near the Saskatchewan border.

Candidates

Martin Shields (Conservative) — Born in Lethbridge in 1948, Shields spent more than 30 years as a teacher and school administrator before settling in Brooks. He later taught part-time at the university level for two decades. Elected to Brooks city council in 2004, he became mayor of Brooks in 2007 and was still serving as mayor when he sought the federal Conservative nomination.

William MacDonald Alexander (Liberal) — Alexander carried the Liberal banner in a riding where the party faced deep Conservative loyalties across the southern Alberta landscape.

Lynn MacWilliam (NDP) — MacWilliam ran for the NDP in a riding where the party's support was historically limited, though the 2015 Alberta provincial NDP victory months earlier had shifted the province's political dynamics.

Rita Ann Fromholt (Green Party) — Fromholt represented the Green Party, raising environmental concerns around water use and agricultural sustainability.

Andrew Kucy ran as an Independent, Frans VandeStroet stood for the Christian Heritage Party, and Fahed Khalid represented Democratic Advancement.

About the Riding

Bow River's economy is anchored by agriculture and food processing. Brooks is home to the JBS Food Canada beef-processing plant (formerly Lakeside Packers), one of the largest meatpacking facilities in the country. The plant transformed Brooks' demographics, drawing immigrant workers from Sudan, Somalia, and other countries. The Eastern Irrigation District, headquartered in Brooks, manages one of Alberta's largest irrigation networks, supplying water to farms producing specialty crops, forage, and cattle feed across the semi-arid prairie. Strathmore, closer to Calgary, functions as a bedroom community with a growing local economy. The Vulcan area is known for grain farming and its tourism draw as a Star Trek-themed destination. Taber, in the riding's south, is celebrated for its corn industry and sugar beet farming supported by irrigation infrastructure. Federal issues in 2015 included water management and irrigation infrastructure, temporary foreign worker program policies affecting the meatpacking industry, and agricultural trade.
