Willowdale occupied the heart of the former City of North York in Toronto, bounded roughly by Finch Avenue to the north, Sheppard Avenue to the south, Bathurst Street to the west, and the Don River to the east. The riding encompassed the rapidly intensifying North York Centre corridor along Yonge Street, where clusters of condominium towers were reshaping what had been a low-rise suburban neighbourhood. Willowdale's population was one of the most ethnically diverse in the Greater Toronto Area, with large Chinese, Korean, and Iranian communities.
Candidates
Ali Ehsassi (Liberal) — A lawyer specializing in international trade who held degrees from the University of Toronto, Osgoode Hall Law School, the London School of Economics, and Georgetown University Law Center. Ehsassi had served on the executive of the international law section of the Ontario Bar Association and had worked at the Ontario Securities Commission and as a policy advisor. He authored articles published in academic texts by Oxford University Press.

Born in Taipei, Leung had lived in the Willowdale area for more than two decades and built a career as an entrepreneur. He served as Parliamentary Secretary for Multiculturalism and was known for an unusual personal distinction: a trained bagpiper, he had played for Queen Elizabeth II on two occasions, including at Balmoral Castle in 2004.
Pouyan Tabasinejad (NDP) — The New Democratic Party candidate in the riding.
James Arruda (Green Party) — The Green Party candidate in the riding.
Birinder Singh Ahluwalia also ran as an independent candidate.
About the Riding
The North York Centre secondary plan area, running along Yonge Street between Finch and Sheppard, was undergoing one of the most dramatic urban transformations in the Toronto region. Dozens of condominium towers had been built or were under construction, drawn by the presence of three subway stations on the Yonge line — Finch, North York Centre, and Sheppard-Yonge. The resulting population surge placed pressure on schools, community centres, and local parkland that had been planned for a much smaller residential base.
The riding's commercial economy centred on Yonge Street's retail corridor, professional services, and a cluster of government offices around the former North York Civic Centre at Mel Lastman Square. The Korean business district along Yonge north of Sheppard was one of the largest Korean commercial areas in Canada, while Persian businesses and restaurants were concentrated along several arterial roads. Willowdale's condominium boom and its proximity to transit made housing density, traffic management, and the adequacy of social infrastructure recurring concerns for residents and candidates alike.
