York Centre

York Centre sat in the northern reaches of the former City of North York, bounded roughly by Steeles Avenue to the north, Highway 401 to the south, Bathurst Street to the west, and Keele Street to the east. The riding encompassed established residential neighbourhoods including Downsview, Bathurst Manor, and parts of the Yorkdale area, and was home to a significant Jewish community alongside growing Filipino, Russian, and Italian populations.

Candidates

Michael Levitt (Liberal) — Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Levitt immigrated to Canada with his family at age fourteen. He attended McGill University and built a career in business development, serving as a partner and vice-president at the Benjamin Group in Toronto, a company providing lifecycle services to the city's Jewish community. Levitt was active in civic organizations, having served on the boards of Mount Sinai Hospital and the Koffler Centre of the Arts.

Mark Adler (Conservative) — The incumbent MP, elected in 2011 when he defeated Liberal incumbent Ken Dryden, who had held the seat since 2004. Adler graduated from the University of Toronto in 1984 and later attended Carleton University's Graduate School of Public Administration. He founded the Economic Club of Canada, a non-partisan speaker's forum, and had earlier worked as a trade representative in the Government of Ontario's office in Boston.

Hal Berman (NDP) — The New Democratic Party candidate in the riding.

Constantine Kritsonis (Green Party) — The Green Party candidate in the riding.

About the Riding

York Centre's demographic composition made it one of the most culturally layered ridings in the Greater Toronto Area. Approximately one in five residents identified as Jewish, making it one of the largest Jewish communities in Ontario, with synagogues, community centres, and businesses concentrated along Bathurst Street. At the same time, the riding had the highest proportion of residents of Filipino origin among all Toronto ridings, and significant Russian and Italian communities added further diversity.

The Yorkdale Shopping Centre, one of Canada's highest-grossing malls, sat near the riding's southern boundary and was a major commercial anchor. Downsview Park, a 572-acre site on the former Canadian Forces Base Downsview, was in the process of being redeveloped as an urban park and mixed-use community, with Bombardier's aerospace manufacturing facility remaining an important employer on the adjacent lands. The riding's mix of post-war bungalows and newer condominium developments reflected the broader intensification pressures facing inner-suburban Toronto, and transit access — particularly bus service connecting residential areas to the Yonge-University subway line — was a frequent concern among residents.
