Don Valley North

Don Valley North occupies the northeastern corner of Toronto's former North York district, bounded by Steeles Avenue to the north and Highway 401 to the south. The riding was created through the 2012 redistribution and includes the communities of Bayview Village, Henry Farm, Hillcrest Village, Don Valley Village, and Bayview Woods–Steeles. Sheppard Avenue bisects the riding east to west, and the area features a blend of detached homes, townhouse developments, and condominium towers near the Sheppard subway line.

Candidates

Geng Tan (Liberal) — Born in Hunan, China, Tan came to Canada in 1998 on a student visa and earned a PhD in chemical engineering and applied chemistry from the University of Toronto. Before entering politics, he worked as a scientist at Ontario Power Generation. Tan was making his first run for elected office in 2015.

Joe Daniel (Conservative) — A telecommunications engineer educated at Plymouth University in the United Kingdom and the University of Toronto, Daniel immigrated to Canada in 1987. He spent fourteen years at Celestica as an engineering manager and taught fibre optic technology at Humber and Centennial Colleges. Elected in Don Valley East in 2011, he was shifted into the new Don Valley North riding by redistribution.

Akil Sadikali (NDP) — A software developer, Sadikali ran as the NDP standard-bearer in this newly drawn riding.

Caroline Brown (Green Party) — Brown represented the Green Party in Don Valley North.

About the Riding

Don Valley North recorded some of the highest immigrant populations of any Ontario riding in the 2011 National Household Survey, with nearly sixty-five percent of residents born outside Canada. The Chinese community forms the largest single ethnic group, and Mandarin and Cantonese are widely spoken alongside English, Korean, Farsi, and Tagalog. The area is served by the Sheppard subway line, the Bayview and Bessarion stations, and multiple bus routes feeding into the Yonge–University line. Major employers in and near the riding include the Bayview Village shopping centre, commercial offices along Sheppard and Leslie, and the North York Civic Centre. Immigration policy, transit expansion, and seniors' services were salient concerns in the riding during the 2015 campaign.
