Candidates

Peter Kent (Conservative) — Before entering politics, Kent had a distinguished career in broadcast journalism spanning four decades. Born in England to Canadian military parents, he joined CFCN-TV in Calgary in 1965, covered the Vietnam War as a freelance foreign correspondent, later anchored CBC Television's The National, and spent a decade at NBC News, where he earned four Emmy nominations. He was inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2000. First elected in Thornhill in 2008, he served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Americas) before being appointed Minister of the Environment in January 2011, a post he held until July 2013. He was seeking his third term.

Nancy Coldham (Liberal) — Coldham carried the Liberal banner in Thornhill, participating in community debates on issues including the economy, Canada's relationship with Israel, and combating antisemitism. She faced an uphill challenge in a riding where the Conservatives had built large margins in successive elections.

Lorne Cherry (NDP) — Cherry represented the NDP in the riding, engaging in all-candidates forums on issues of concern to the local community.

Josh Rachlis (Green Party) — Rachlis stood for the Green Party, rounding out the slate of candidates in a riding dominated by the Conservative-Liberal contest.

About the Riding

Thornhill is a suburban riding shaped by successive waves of immigration. Its Jewish community—the largest concentration in any Canadian federal riding, at roughly 30 percent of the population—has given the riding a distinctive political character in which Canada-Israel relations, Middle East policy, and antisemitism have been perennial campaign issues. Synagogues, Jewish day schools, and community centres are woven throughout the neighbourhoods along Bathurst Street and Clark Avenue. The riding has also attracted significant Russian-speaking, Chinese, Korean, and Iranian immigrant populations, creating a multilingual commercial landscape along its major arteries. The Promenade Shopping Centre and the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre development, anchored by a new subway extension under construction at the time, signalled the area's transition from low-density suburbia to a more urban form. Health care, transit, and immigration policy were the dominant federal issues in 2015. Kent's profile as a former cabinet minister and his strong margins in previous elections made Thornhill one of the safest Conservative seats in the Greater Toronto Area.
