Niagara West

Niagara West occupied the western flank of the Niagara Peninsula, running from the Lake Ontario shoreline near Grimsby southward through the Niagara Escarpment to the flatlands bordering Lake Erie. The riding took in the towns of Grimsby, Lincoln, and Pelham, the townships of West Lincoln and Wainfleet, and the community of Beamsville, combining small-town centres with a landscape of farms, vineyards, and escarpment conservation lands.

Candidates

Dean Allison (Conservative) — First elected in 2004 in the predecessor riding of Niagara West—Glanbrook, Allison held a degree in economics from Wilfrid Laurier University and had built a career in the franchise business sector before entering politics. In Parliament he served on the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities, which he chaired, as well as the Standing Committee on Public Accounts and the Standing Committee on International Trade.

Phil Rose (Liberal) — Rose was a past president of the Media Ecology Association and held academic appointments at McMaster University and York University. He brought a background in communications and media studies to the campaign.

Nameer Rahman (NDP) — A policy consultant based in Grimsby, Rahman was active in local economic development as vice-chair of the Grimsby Economic Development Advisory Committee. He focused his campaign on community investment and affordability.

Sid Frere (Green Party) — Frere represented the Green Party in the riding, advocating for environmental protection of the Niagara Escarpment and sustainable agriculture.

Harold Jonker ran for the Christian Heritage Party and Allan de Roo for the Libertarian Party.

About the Riding

The Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, bisected the riding and shaped both its geography and its economy. Below the escarpment, the Niagara Peninsula's microclimate supported a concentration of vineyards and wineries that had transformed communities like Beamsville and Vineland into wine-country destinations. Greenhouse agriculture and tender fruit farming remained important employers. Above the escarpment, the townships of West Lincoln and Wainfleet were more traditionally agricultural, with mixed farming and rural small businesses predominating. Commuting to Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area was a growing reality for residents in the northern part of the riding, making highway infrastructure and GO Transit expansion frequent topics of local discussion.
