Perched atop the Niagara Escarpment, Hamilton Mountain encompasses the residential plateau that locals simply call "the Mountain." The riding covers a broad swath of upper Hamilton, from the escarpment brow overlooking the harbour to the suburban edges where the city gives way to farmland. Neighbourhoods range from established postwar subdivisions near Concession Street to newer developments along the Linc (Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway) corridor. The riding was left open when NDP incumbent Chris Charlton announced in late 2014 that she would not seek re-election after nearly a decade in Parliament.
Candidates
Scott Duvall (NDP) was a Hamilton city councillor representing Ward 7 on the central Mountain since 2006. Before entering municipal politics, Duvall worked as a steelworker at Stelco, following his father into the plant, and served as president of United Steelworkers Local 5328. He won the NDP nomination in January 2015 after a contested race against former provincial NDP candidate Bryan Adamczyk.
Shaun Burt (Liberal) was a local teacher who spent several years working within the Liberal riding association before winning the nomination in August 2015. Former Hamilton Mountain Liberal MP Beth Phinney, who held the seat from 1988 to 2005, endorsed Burt's candidacy, noting his years of grassroots party work.
Al Miles (Conservative) was a lifelong Mountain resident and youth worker who had previously sought a seat as a public school trustee. He ran as the Conservative standard-bearer in a riding where the party traditionally placed third.
Raheem Aman (Green Party) stood as the Green candidate.
Andrew James Caton (Libertarian) and Jim Enos (Christian Heritage Party) also contested the riding.
About the Riding
Hamilton Mountain is primarily a residential riding whose residents commute to workplaces across the city and the broader Golden Horseshoe. The Mountain's population grew steadily through the 2000s and early 2010s, with new subdivisions expanding southward toward the city's urban boundary. Major employers in the vicinity include Juravinski Hospital, the Limeridge Mall commercial district, and Mohawk College's Fennell campus. Federal issues during the 2015 campaign included infrastructure funding for transit connections between the Mountain and the lower city, pension protections for steelworkers and other manufacturing employees affected by corporate restructuring, and affordable housing. The riding had been an NDP-Liberal battleground since the 1980s, and with the incumbent stepping aside, both parties targeted the seat as a potential pickup.
