Stretching along the southern shore of Lake Ontario, Hamilton East—Stoney Creek links the older east-end neighbourhoods of Hamilton with the former city of Stoney Creek to the east. The riding runs from the industrial harbour lands through working-class communities such as Bartonville, Normanhurst, and McQuesten, then east through Stoney Creek's historic downtown, Fruitland, and Winona, bounded to the south by the Niagara Escarpment. The Red Hill Valley Parkway, completed in 2007 after decades of debate, bisects the riding and connects the harbour area to the upper city.
Candidates
Bob Bratina (Liberal) brought decades of public life in Hamilton to the contest. A broadcaster with more than four decades in radio, Bratina served on Hamilton City Council from 2004 to 2010 before being elected mayor, a position he held from 2010 to 2014. His term as mayor saw the completion of a new stadium and progress on the Randle Reef contaminated sediment remediation project. Rather than seek re-election as mayor, he pursued the Liberal nomination in this riding.
Wayne Marston (NDP) was the three-term incumbent, first elected in 2006 when he unseated Liberal cabinet minister Tony Valeri by fewer than 500 votes. Before entering Parliament, Marston retired from Bell Canada in 1995 and served as president of the Hamilton and District Labour Council for eleven years. He was awarded the Medal of Bravery for pulling a man from a burning pickup truck near Flamborough in 1986.
Diane Bubanko (Conservative) was a longtime Conservative organizer with more than two decades of behind-the-scenes party work at both the federal and provincial levels. She served as executive assistant to Conservative MP Stella Ambler and was chief financial officer of the riding's Ontario PC association.
Erin Davis (Green Party) carried the Green Party banner in the riding.
Bob Mann (Communist) and Wendell Fields (Marxist-Leninist) also stood as candidates.
About the Riding
The riding's economic character blends Hamilton's industrial heritage with the more suburban and agricultural feel of Stoney Creek's eastern reaches. The Stelco and Dofasco steel operations have anchored the local economy for generations, though restructuring and ownership changes in the steel sector created uncertainty for thousands of families in the riding during the 2011–2015 period. Stoney Creek's lakefront communities experienced significant residential growth, while older east-end neighbourhoods contended with aging infrastructure. Federal issues prominent in the 2015 campaign included infrastructure spending, support for manufacturing workers, and environmental remediation along the harbour. The contest between Bratina and Marston drew particular attention as a battle between two well-known local figures, with the riding seen as a bellwether for Liberal fortunes in Hamilton.
