Niagara Falls

Stretching along the western bank of the Niagara River, the riding of Niagara Falls encompassed the city of Niagara Falls, the historic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the town of Fort Erie at the southern tip of the peninsula. The district drew its identity from the world-famous waterfalls that anchored a tourism economy worth billions of dollars annually, while also taking in the quieter agricultural lands and vineyards of Niagara-on-the-Lake and the border-crossing communities of Fort Erie and Crystal Beach.

Candidates

Rob Nicholson (Conservative) — A veteran parliamentarian first elected in 1984, Nicholson held a law degree from the University of Windsor and practised in Niagara Falls before entering politics. He served in several senior cabinet posts under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, including Minister of Justice and Attorney General from 2007 to 2013, Minister of National Defence from 2013 to 2015, and Minister of Foreign Affairs from February 2015 onward, making him one of the most experienced ministers seeking re-election in the region.

Ron Planche (Liberal) — A photographer and former vice-chair of the Niagara Falls Transit Commission, Planche had previously served as a local and regional councillor in Oakville from 1976 to 1981 and as executive assistant to Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor from 2003 to 2011. His campaign drew national attention when a campaign video he produced went viral online during the summer of 2015.

Carolynn Ioannoni (NDP) — A Niagara Falls city councillor since 1999, Ioannoni brought extensive municipal government experience to the federal race. She was well known locally for her advocacy on community issues at the city and regional council levels.

Steven Soos (Green Party) — Soos carried the Green Party banner in the riding, focusing his campaign on environmental sustainability and local quality-of-life concerns.

About the Riding

The riding's economy revolved heavily around tourism, with the falls, Clifton Hill entertainment district, Fallsview Casino Resort, and Casino Niagara drawing more than thirteen million visitors to the broader Niagara region each year. Niagara-on-the-Lake contributed a thriving wine industry and the internationally renowned Shaw Festival theatre season. Fort Erie's economy was shaped by its position as a border crossing to Buffalo, New York, while agriculture — including tender fruit orchards and vineyards along the Niagara Parkway — remained a significant employer across the riding. Infrastructure investment, border-crossing wait times, and the seasonal nature of tourism employment were persistent local concerns heading into the 2015 campaign.
