Candidates

Cathay Wagantall (Conservative) was raised in Weyburn and Esterhazy and has lived in east-central Saskatchewan for most of her life. She and her husband own a small business in Esterhazy providing signage, printing, and branded apparel. She studied physical education at the University of Saskatchewan before entering politics. First elected in Yorkton—Melville in 2015, Wagantall has served on the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs and has been a consistent advocate for veterans' issues in Parliament.

Luke Guimond (Liberal) grew up in Regina and holds a BA Honours in Political Science from Campion College at the University of Regina and a Master's degree in Political Theory from the University of Ottawa. He has worked in several federal ministers' offices in Ottawa, notably on the official languages file, and his family has roots in the Yorkton—Melville area.

Michaela Krakowetz (NDP) was born in Saskatoon and raised in Lintlaw, a small community in the riding. She has focused her campaign on affordability, rural services, and the impacts of U.S. tariffs on Saskatchewan's export-dependent economy.

Valerie Brooks (Green Party) ran as the Green Party candidate in the riding.

Alec Guggenmos (Libertarian) ran as the Libertarian Party candidate in the riding.

About the Riding

The economy of Yorkton—Melville rests on agriculture, potash mining, and food processing. Grain farming and cattle operations dominate the landscape, while the potash mines near Esterhazy—among the largest in the world—are a major employer in the region. Yorkton is home to several canola crushing and grain processing facilities that serve as critical links in Saskatchewan's agricultural supply chain.

The riding's vast geography means that many communities are small and widely dispersed, creating persistent challenges around healthcare access, school consolidation, and transportation infrastructure. The availability of family physicians in rural areas and the state of rural highways are longstanding concerns that figured prominently in local discussions heading into the 2025 election.

The northern portion of the riding, including communities like Hudson Bay, Porcupine Plain, and Carrot River, is situated near the transition from parkland to boreal forest and has an economy that includes forestry alongside agriculture. First Nations communities in the riding, including those in the Kamsack and Qu'Appelle areas, face additional challenges related to housing, clean water, and economic development.

U.S. tariff threats were a major concern across the riding in 2025, given the heavy reliance on agricultural and potash exports to American markets. Federal energy and environmental policy, particularly as it relates to farm input costs and the carbon tax, also resonated strongly with voters in this deeply rural constituency.
