Saskatoon West

Saskatoon West spans the western half of Saskatchewan's largest city, taking in a mix of established inner-city neighbourhoods and expanding suburban developments. The riding stretches from the South Saskatchewan River on the east through Riversdale, Pleasant Hill, Massey Place, and Confederation Park to the city's growing western edge. Created ahead of the 2015 election from portions of former Saskatoon-area ridings, the district encompasses some of Saskatoon's most socially and economically varied communities.

Candidates

Brad Redekopp (Conservative) — Born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Redekopp relocated to the Saskatoon area in 1984 and earned a bachelor of commerce from the University of Saskatchewan. He spent two decades in finance and accounting in the manufacturing sector, including a stint as plant manager for Case New Holland, and later owned and operated Cherry Creek Homes, a residential construction company, for ten years.

Sheri Benson (NDP) — The incumbent MP, Benson had served as CEO of the United Way of Saskatoon and Area before her initial election in 2015, leading initiatives such as the city's first Plan to End Homelessness and its Housing First program. In March 2019, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh appointed her as one of the party's deputy leaders. In Parliament she held critic portfolios for labour and housing.

Shah Rukh (Liberal) — Rukh carried the Liberal banner in Saskatoon West. He had previously sought provincial office, running in a 2017 by-election in Saskatoon Fairview.

Shawn Setyo (Green Party) — Originally from Scarborough, Ontario, Setyo moved to Saskatoon at age eighteen to attend the University of Saskatchewan. He also served as leader of the Saskatchewan Green Party and had run for the Greens in multiple previous campaigns at both the federal and provincial levels.

Isaac Hayes (People's Party) — Born in Wisconsin and raised in Saskatoon from age nine, Hayes ran on the People's Party platform emphasizing fiscal conservatism and limited government.

About the Riding

Saskatoon West contains some of the city's most historically significant and economically diverse neighbourhoods. Riversdale, centred along 20th Street, has undergone substantial revitalization over the past two decades, attracting new businesses and a popular farmers' market, though it continues to contend with elevated poverty rates and housing instability. Pleasant Hill, adjacent to Riversdale, has one of the highest proportions of Indigenous residents of any urban neighbourhood in western Canada. These inner-city areas stand in contrast to the riding's western suburbs, where newer developments in Confederation Park and surrounding communities draw working- and middle-class families seeking more affordable housing options.

The riding's economy is tied to the broader Saskatoon labour market, with many residents employed in health care, education, retail, and the service sector. Prairieland Park, which hosts the annual Saskatoon Exhibition and a year-round schedule of agricultural trade shows and events, sits within the riding. Federal issues heading into the 2019 campaign included affordable housing, support for Indigenous communities, and investment in social services for a city whose population had grown rapidly during the resource boom of the previous decade.
