Milton

Milton sits at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment in the Regional Municipality of Halton, roughly 54 kilometres west of downtown Toronto along Highway 401. The riding encompasses the Town of Milton and a portion of Burlington north of Dundas Street, a constituency defined by extraordinary population growth that transformed a quiet agricultural town into one of the GTA's largest suburban communities.

Candidates

Adam van Koeverden (Liberal) — A four-time Olympic medallist in sprint kayak, van Koeverden won gold in the K-1 500-metre event at the 2004 Athens Olympics and added medals at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Games. He carried the Canadian flag at the closing ceremony in Athens and again at the opening ceremony in Beijing, and received the 2004 Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's top athlete. He graduated from McMaster University with a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology, serving as class valedictorian. He won the Liberal nomination in Milton in January 2019.

Lisa Raitt (Conservative) — First elected in 2008 in the former riding of Halton, Raitt held a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School, a Master of Science from the University of Guelph, and a Bachelor of Science from St. Francis Xavier University. Before entering politics, she served as CEO of the Toronto Port Authority, becoming the first female harbourmaster of a Canadian port. She served in three senior cabinet portfolios under Prime Minister Stephen Harper — Natural Resources, Labour, and Transport — and was named Conservative deputy leader after the 2017 party leadership race.

Farina Hassan (NDP) — A mortgage broker in the finance industry, Hassan had lived in the Milton area for six years and previously ran for the Ontario NDP in the riding of Mississauga—Erin Mills in the 2018 provincial election.

Eleanor Hayward (Green Party) — Co-founder and past president of the MiltonGreen Environmental Association, Hayward had spent over fifteen years as a businesswoman in the Halton region and led campaigns focused on reducing carbon footprint and supporting local biodiversity.

Percy Dastur (People's Party) also stood as a candidate.

About the Riding

Milton's growth has been the central fact of its politics for two decades. The town's population surged from roughly 31,000 in 2001 to over 110,000 by 2016, driven by its position on the Highway 401 corridor and its accessibility to Greater Toronto's employment markets. New subdivisions replaced farmland at a pace that strained schools, roads, and community services, while waves of newcomers reshaped the town's demographics.

The GO Transit Milton line connects commuters to downtown Toronto, though service frequency and capacity were persistent complaints. The northern portion of the riding reaches into the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, creating tension between development pressures and environmental conservation. The proposed CN Milton Logistics Hub — a major intermodal truck-rail terminal — was a flashpoint, with the Town of Milton and Halton Region opposing the project over environmental and traffic concerns. The 2019 contest drew national attention as a matchup between one of Canada's most decorated Olympic athletes and the Conservative Party's deputy leader.
