Hamilton Mountain

Hamilton Mountain sits atop the Niagara Escarpment, covering the residential plateau that Hamiltonians refer to simply as "the Mountain." The riding extends from the escarpment brow, with its panoramic views of the harbour and lower city, south through established postwar subdivisions and newer developments along the Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway corridor toward the city's suburban fringe.

Candidates

Scott Duvall (NDP) was the incumbent MP, first elected in 2015. Before entering federal politics, Duvall served as a Hamilton city councillor representing Ward 7 on the central Mountain beginning in 2006. He spent his working career as a steelworker at Stelco, following his father into the plant, and served as president of United Steelworkers Local 5328.

Bruno Uggenti (Liberal) was a real estate lawyer who had been practising in Hamilton for more than 27 years, building his own firm, Campbell Mihailovich Uggenti. Born and raised in Hamilton, he served on the boards of the Hamilton Community Foundation, the Rotary Club of Hamilton Mountain, and the Hamilton Law Association. He was also a former president of the Cancer Assistance Program.

Peter Dyakowski (Conservative) was a former professional football offensive lineman who played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats from 2007 to 2016 and the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2017. Originally from Vancouver, Dyakowski attended Louisiana State University on a football scholarship and won a national championship in 2004. Off the field, he won CBC's "Canada's Smartest Person" competition in 2012 and appeared on Jeopardy! in 2014.

Dave Urquhart (Green Party) carried the Green Party banner on the Mountain.

Trevor Lee (People's Party), Jim Enos (Christian Heritage Party), and Richard Plett (Parti Rhinoceros Party) also contested the riding.

About the Riding

Hamilton Mountain is primarily residential, with its residents commuting to workplaces across the city and the broader Golden Horseshoe region. Juravinski Hospital, the Limeridge Mall commercial district, and Mohawk College's Fennell campus are among the major institutions within or near the riding. Sam Lawrence Park on the escarpment brow is a popular gathering spot offering sweeping views of the harbour and the lower city. The Mountain has seen steady population growth, with new subdivisions pushing southward toward the urban boundary. Federal campaign issues in 2019 centred on pension protections for steelworkers and manufacturing employees affected by corporate restructuring, affordable housing as rents climbed across Hamilton, and improved public transit connections between the Mountain and the lower city. The riding had swung between the NDP and the Liberals over previous election cycles, and Duvall's defence of his seat attracted close attention in the Hamilton area.
