Hamilton Centre

Hamilton Centre encompasses the dense urban core of Hamilton, Ontario, stretching from the industrial waterfront along Hamilton Harbour south through the downtown commercial district to the foot of the Niagara Escarpment. The riding takes in neighbourhoods such as Corktown, Beasley, Kirkendall, and the International Village, areas shaped by more than a century of steelmaking and successive waves of immigration.

Candidates

Matthew Green (NDP) grew up in Hamilton, the son of a former ironworker and a retired school teacher. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and legal studies from Acadia University. In 2014, Green was elected to Hamilton City Council representing Ward 3, becoming the first Black Canadian to serve on the council. During his time on council he pressed the city to become the first municipality in Ontario to license and regulate payday lending. After leaving council in 2018, he served as executive director of the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion, a non-profit promoting racial equality.

Jasper Kujavsky (Liberal) was a lawyer whose practice included representing refugee claimants. He also worked as a prosecutor handling cases involving intimate partner and gender-based violence, and had experience as a development consultant. Kujavsky campaigned on affordable housing, waterfront revitalization, and poverty reduction.

Monica Ciriello (Conservative) ran on a platform emphasizing job creation, economic prosperity, and affordability. She campaigned in favour of pipeline development and against the federal carbon pricing plan.

Jason Lopez (Green Party) was born and raised in Hamilton Centre to Colombian immigrant parents. He studied history at McMaster University and served as CEO of the riding's federal Green Party electoral district association. Lopez advocated for a guaranteed liveable income and a national school lunch program.

Melina Mamone (People's Party), Gary Duyzer (Christian Heritage Party), Tony Lemma (Independent), Edward Graydon (Independent), and Nathalie Xian Yi Yan (Independent) also appeared on the ballot.

About the Riding

Hamilton Centre has been held by the NDP at the federal level since 2004, when David Christopherson first won the seat. The riding's political character reflects its working-class roots, forged in the shadow of the steel mills that line the harbour. ArcelorMittal Dofasco remains a major industrial presence, though the local economy has gradually diversified toward health care, education, and the arts. McMaster Innovation Park and the cultural district along James Street North represent the newer face of the riding's economy. Despite these shifts, Hamilton Centre contends with some of the highest rates of poverty and food bank usage in Ontario. Much of the riding's housing stock is rental, and rising rents driven by spillover demand from the Greater Toronto Area have intensified affordability pressures. The opioid crisis and homelessness weigh heavily on the downtown core. Federal issues in the 2019 campaign included affordable housing investment, support for harm reduction services, and infrastructure funding for aging water and transit systems.
