Hamilton East—Stoney Creek

Hamilton East—Stoney Creek connects the older industrial east end of Hamilton with the former city of Stoney Creek along the Lake Ontario shoreline. The riding runs from the harbour lands through neighbourhoods like Bartonville, Normanhurst, and McQuesten, then east through Stoney Creek's historic downtown and the lakeside communities of Fruitland and Winona. The Red Hill Valley Parkway, completed in 2007, cuts through the riding linking the harbour to the upper city.

Candidates

Bob Bratina (Liberal) was the incumbent MP, first elected in 2015 after a long career in Hamilton public life. A broadcaster for more than four decades, Bratina served on Hamilton City Council from 2004 to 2010 before being elected mayor of Hamilton, serving from 2010 to 2014. As mayor he oversaw the completion of a new stadium and progress on the Randle Reef contaminated sediment cleanup in Hamilton Harbour.

Nick Milanovic (NDP) was a labour lawyer, arbitrator, and mediator who had worked with the Canadian Union of Public Employees. Earlier in his career, he practised law in Washington, D.C., taking on international cases against exploitative corporations, including litigation on behalf of Burmese villagers and American farm labourers suffering pesticide-related illnesses.

Nikki Kaur (Conservative) was a family and real estate lawyer practising in the Toronto area. She had previously worked as a financial advisor at Scotiabank for eight years and put herself through university working as a bank teller. Kaur focused her campaign on opposing the federal carbon tax.

Peter Ormond (Green Party) had been active in Hamilton's Green Party for two decades. He worked as an energy conservation specialist with Alectra Utilities and had taught at Mohawk College. Ormond produced a film called "The Natural Wisdom" that was presented at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change conference in Copenhagen.

Charles Crocker (People's Party) also stood as a candidate.

About the Riding

The riding bridges two distinct communities. Hamilton's east end carries the legacy of the steel industry, with generations of families connected to the Stelco and Dofasco plants along the harbour. Stoney Creek's lakefront communities have experienced significant residential growth, drawing newcomers attracted by more affordable housing relative to the Greater Toronto Area. The riding's multicultural character is pronounced, with long-established Italian and eastern European communities joined in recent decades by newcomers from South Asia and the Middle East. Commercial corridors along Barton Street, King Street East, and Highway 8 reflect this diversity. Key federal issues in 2019 included infrastructure investment for aging roads and water systems, support for manufacturing workers facing industrial restructuring, and transit improvements connecting the riding's communities to employment centres across Hamilton.
