About the Riding
Steveston—Richmond East was created in the 2012 redistribution and contested for the first time in 2015. The historic Steveston village, founded in the 1880s as a salmon canning centre at the mouth of the Fraser River’s south arm, is home to Canada’s largest commercial fishing fleet, with over 600 boats moored at Steveston Harbour. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site preserves the area’s industrial heritage. Richmond’s population of approximately 200,000 is one of the most diverse in Canada, with a majority of residents identifying as visible minorities. The city’s economy is anchored by Vancouver International Airport on Sea Island, along with retail centres, technology firms, and agriculture on the fertile delta farmland protected by the Agricultural Land Reserve. Housing affordability, the proposed replacement of the George Massey Tunnel, and transit connectivity were key local issues in 2015.
