She served as senior policy advisor to federal Environment Minister Thomas McMillan in the Mulroney government, where she was involved in negotiating the Montreal Protocol. About the Riding
The riding blends the suburban communities of the Saanich Peninsula with the island-based rural lifestyle of the Gulf Islands. Sidney, a seaside town of about 11,000, is known for its bookstores and proximity to the BC Ferries terminal and the Victoria International Airport. The Gulf Islands are home to artists, retirees, and small-scale farmers, with Salt Spring Island — population approximately 11,000 — being the largest and most commercially active. The islands face challenges including limited freshwater supplies, housing pressure from vacation rental conversions, and the high cost of ferry-dependent goods. Agriculture on the peninsula includes berry farms and vineyards, while the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Saanich is a notable federal research facility. Environmental issues dominated the 2015 campaign, including oil tanker traffic through the Gulf Islands, the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, and protection of the endangered southern resident killer whale population in the Salish Sea.
