Candidates

Dianne Watts (Conservative) — Watts served as mayor of Surrey, British Columbia’s second-largest city, from 2005 to 2014, having been elected as the city’s first female mayor. Before entering politics she worked as a credit manager and materials consultant for an architecture firm, and first won a seat on Surrey city council in 1996. She won the Conservative nomination by acclamation for the newly drawn riding.

Judy Higginbotham (Liberal) — A former Surrey city councillor, Higginbotham entered the race as a late replacement after the original Liberal candidate resigned. Despite a limited campaign budget and compressed timeline, she mounted a competitive challenge.

Pixie Hobby (NDP) — An environmental lawyer and Crescent Beach resident, Hobby was acclaimed as the NDP candidate at a nomination meeting of over 100 party members.

Larry Colero ran for the Green Party, Bonnie Hu for the Libertarian Party, and Brian Marlatt for the Progressive Canadian Party.

About the Riding

South Surrey—White Rock is among the more affluent ridings in Metro Vancouver, with higher-than-average median household incomes and property values. The City of White Rock, a separate municipality of roughly 20,000 residents nestled between Surrey and the border, is known as a retirement destination and seaside resort community. The Peace Arch border crossing at Douglas, one of the busiest land crossings between Canada and the United States, sits at the riding’s southern edge. Cross-border commerce and border infrastructure were significant local issues. Transportation planning—particularly proposals for SkyTrain extension into South Surrey and improvements to Highway 99—featured prominently in the 2015 campaign. The riding’s economy is driven by retail, healthcare, education, and professional services, with Peninsula Village and Semiahmoo shopping centres serving as commercial hubs.
