About the Riding
CFB Esquimalt, the Canadian Forces' Pacific naval base, is the riding's most prominent employer and economic anchor. About 15 percent of the riding's labour force works in public administration, reflecting the riding's proximity to Victoria, the provincial capital. The riding's western communities of Sooke and Metchosin retain a more rural character, with forestry and small-scale agriculture alongside growing residential development. The Juan de Fuca coastline draws hikers and surfers. Key issues in 2015 included veterans' services, affordable housing in a tightening real estate market, and environmental protection for the region's coastal ecosystems.
