The riding is located within York Region and contained a diverse mix of residential neighbourhoods and busy commercial corridors along Yonge Street and Bayview Avenue.

About the Riding

Markham—Thornhill sits in the southern reaches of one of Canada's most ethnically diverse municipalities. The riding's commercial life revolves around corridors like Highway 7 and Bayview Avenue, while residential areas range from older post-war homes in Thornhill to newer townhouse and condominium developments in Markham's southern neighbourhoods. The Rouge River valley cuts through the eastern boundary, providing significant green space. As a commuter-oriented constituency in the inner suburbs of the Greater Toronto Area, residents contended with traffic congestion and transit gaps, particularly the absence of rapid transit connections southward to Toronto. Federal infrastructure investment and immigration policy were persistent topics of debate in a riding where many constituents had arrived in Canada within the preceding two decades.
