About the Riding

Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is home to Garrison Saint-Jean, which houses the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, the primary basic training facility for Canada's military, processing more than 7,000 recruits annually. The Royal Military College Saint-Jean also operates on the garrison grounds. The military presence is a significant economic driver, and defence policy carried particular weight in the riding following the October 2014 ramming attack in which Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent was killed in a Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu parking lot — an event that shook the community and raised security concerns across the country. The riding is predominantly francophone. The NDP had taken the seat in the 2011 wave, and in 2015 the Liberals sought to reclaim it as part of their broader push through the Montérégie.
