Châteauguay—Lacolle

Created in the 2012 redistribution from parts of Beauharnois—Salaberry and Châteauguay—Saint-Constant, this riding covers roughly 940 square kilometres of the western Montérégie, stretching from the bedroom community of Châteauguay on Montreal's south shore south through flat, fertile farmland to the U.S. border at Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle. With a population approaching 98,000, the riding mixes francophone suburban neighbourhoods, anglophone pockets in Châteauguay, and a rural hinterland of market gardens and fruit orchards.

Candidates

Brenda Shanahan (Liberal) — A former banker and social worker, Shanahan earned a Bachelor of Social Work from McGill University. She had worked in financial services and community advocacy before seeking the Liberal nomination in this newly created riding.

Sophie Stanké (Bloc Québécois) — An entertainer and comedian, Stanké had previously run twice at the provincial level under the Parti Québécois banner, in 2012 and 2014. The return of Gilles Duceppe to the Bloc leadership prompted her to enter the federal contest.

Sylvain Chicoine (NDP) — The incumbent MP from the former Châteauguay—Saint-Constant riding, Chicoine held a diploma in police technology from Collège de Maisonneuve and had worked as a special constable at the Université de Montréal before his surprise election in 2011. In Parliament he served as the NDP's deputy critic for veterans' affairs.

Philippe St-Pierre (Conservative) — St-Pierre carried the Conservative standard in a riding where the party typically finished in the lower tier of results.

Jency Mercier ran for the Green Party and Linda Sullivan ran for the Marxist-Leninist Party.

About the Riding

Châteauguay, with roughly 48,000 residents, functions as a commuter suburb, its population largely employed in Montreal. South of the urban belt, the landscape opens into some of Quebec's most productive agricultural land: fruit, vegetable, and grain farms supply Montreal and markets in Ontario and the northeastern United States. The border crossing at Lacolle on Autoroute 15 is one of the busiest land ports between Canada and the United States, making cross-border trade and customs infrastructure a recurring federal issue. During the 2015 campaign, local debates touched on support for family farms, the management of the St. Lawrence Seaway corridor, and investment in commuter rail service linking the south shore to Montreal.
