With a strong francophone character, the district is densely settled suburban territory where commuters travel daily to Montreal for work.
Candidates
Matthew Dube (NDP) -- Elected in the 2011 orange wave at age twenty-two while still a political science student at McGill University, Dube was part of the so-called "McGill Five" -- a cohort of young NDP candidates swept into office on the party's historic Quebec breakthrough. Before his election, he had served as co-president of NDP McGill and as president of Quebec Young New Democrats. He sought re-election in the newly drawn riding after representing the predecessor district of Chambly--Borduas.
Karine Desjardins (Liberal) -- Desjardins ran as the Liberal candidate, emphasizing digital outreach. She focused on the party's promises of middle-class tax cuts and infrastructure investment.
Yves Lessard (Bloc Quebecois) -- A former union adviser and city councillor in Saint-Basile-le-Grand, Lessard had represented the predecessor riding of Chambly--Borduas for the Bloc from 2004 to 2011, winning three consecutive elections before being unseated by Dube in the NDP wave. He sought to reclaim the seat for the Bloc in 2015.
Claude Chalhoub (Conservative) -- Chalhoub represented the Conservatives in a riding where the party typically ran a distant fourth.
Fode Kerfalla Yansane (Green Party) and Michael Maher (Libertarian) also appeared on the ballot.
About the Riding
The Richelieu River corridor that defines this riding has deep roots in Quebec's history. Today, the area functions primarily as a bedroom community for Montreal, with residential growth fuelling demand for improved commuter rail and highway capacity. Mont-Saint-Hilaire, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, draws visitors to its trails and orchards. Local economic activity includes food processing, light manufacturing, and a growing service sector. The 2015 contest was closely watched as a test of whether the NDP could hold its 2011 gains in suburban Quebec against both a resurgent Liberal Party and a Bloc Quebecois working to rebuild after its 2011 collapse.
