Brome--Missisquoi

Nestled in Quebec's Eastern Townships, Brome--Missisquoi stretches from the rolling farmland near Farnham and Cowansville eastward through the vineyards of Dunham to the ski hills and forests around Sutton and Lac-Brome. The riding borders Vermont to the south and covers a varied landscape that transitions from the Richelieu River lowlands into the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The district balances its agricultural heritage with a growing tourism and artisanal economy.

Candidates

Denis Paradis (Liberal) -- A lawyer admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1976, Paradis served as president of the Quebec Bar in 1993 before entering federal politics. He won a by-election in Brome--Missisquoi in 1995 and held the seat through four elections, serving as Secretary of State for La Francophonie and as Minister of State for Financial Institutions under the Chretien and Martin governments. He lost the riding in 2006 and spent nearly a decade out of Parliament before mounting his comeback in 2015.

Catherine Lusson (NDP) -- Lusson had worked for four years as a political aide to the outgoing NDP MP for Brome--Missisquoi, Pierre Jacob. She had also served as a coordinator for a local anti-poverty organization and as president of the Bromont community garden. Her campaign centred on dairy supply management, environmental standards, and preserving Canada Post services.

Patrick Melchior (Bloc Quebecois) -- Living in Farnham, Melchior served as director general of the Maison des jeunes Le Boum in Bedford and was involved in community development committees across the MRC. He had previously run provincially for Option Nationale in 2012.

Charles Poulin (Conservative) -- Poulin represented the Conservatives in a riding where the party drew support primarily from the more anglophone western portions of the district.

Cindy Moynan (Green Party) and Patrick Paine (Forces et Democratie) also stood as candidates.

About the Riding

Brome--Missisquoi is the heart of Quebec's wine country, home to the province's most celebrated wine route, which threads through more than twenty vineyards concentrated around Dunham and Lac-Brome. Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy -- dairy farming and grain production dominate the western lowlands, while orchards, small livestock operations, and artisanal food producers flourish in the hillier eastern terrain. Bromont, a four-season resort town, anchors the riding's tourism sector. The riding's bilingual character -- with significant anglophone communities around Lac-Brome (formerly Knowlton) -- gives it a distinctive cultural texture within Quebec. Heading into the 2015 vote, dairy farmers were closely following the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade negotiations, worried that concessions on supply management could undercut their livelihoods. Denis Paradis, who also owned a winery in Saint-Armand, positioned himself as a candidate with deep ties to both the agricultural and cultural life of the region.
