About the Riding

St. John's South—Mount Pearl is the most suburban of the province's ridings. Mount Pearl, a self-contained city of roughly 23,000 adjacent to St. John's, has its own commercial districts and municipal services. Paradise, to the northwest, was one of the fastest-growing communities in Atlantic Canada during the 2000s, driven by young families seeking affordable housing within easy reach of St. John's employers. The Southern Shore communities of Bay Bulls and Witless Bay serve as gateways to the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, where boat tours to view puffin colonies and humpback whales have become a significant tourism draw. Many residents work in the offshore oil industry or its onshore supply chain, and by 2015, the province's deepening dependence on oil revenues was emerging as a major concern. Employment insurance access, federal infrastructure investment, and the cost of living were among the bread-and-butter issues that shaped the campaign in this riding.
