Running the length of Newfoundland's west coast, Long Range Mountains stretches from Channel-Port aux Basques and Burgeo in the south to St. Anthony and L'Anse aux Meadows at the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula. The riding takes its name from the mountain chain that forms the island's western spine, a rugged landscape of fjords, plateaus, and dense boreal forest. Corner Brook, the largest city on Newfoundland's west coast, anchors the riding's economy and population.
Candidates
Gudie Hutchings (Liberal) — Hutchings grew up in the Humber Valley and studied at Acadia University before building a career in the tourism and outfitting industries, including operating fly-fishing lodges in Labrador. She served as president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Outfitters Association, sat on the inaugural national board of the Canadian Federation of Outfitting Associations, and led the Corner Brook Chamber of Commerce. She also chaired the Battle Harbour Historic Trust. She had never sought elected office before winning the Liberal nomination in March 2015.
Wayne Ruth (Conservative) — Ruth was a retired Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro worker who had served four terms as mayor of Kippens, a small town near Stephenville. He was a past president of the Federation of Newfoundland and Labrador Municipalities, a founding member of the Atlantic Mayors Congress, and a former member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
Devon Babstock (NDP) — Babstock represented the NDP in the riding, seeking to offer a progressive alternative on the west coast.
Terry Cormier (Green Party) — Cormier ran for the Greens, emphasizing environmental protection in a region defined by its natural landscapes and outdoor tourism economy.
About the Riding
Long Range Mountains is a riding shaped by geography and distance. Corner Brook depends on its regional hospital, the Grenfell campus of Memorial University, and a paper mill that has operated for decades—though the forestry sector has faced persistent challenges with declining newsprint demand. Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a centrepiece of the riding's tourism economy and draws visitors from around the world to its fjords, sea stacks, and exposed mantle rock at the Tablelands. The Great Northern Peninsula relies on fishing, tourism, and seasonal work; the Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows is among the most significant archaeological sites in North America. Channel-Port aux Basques serves as the island's gateway, with Marine Atlantic ferry service linking Newfoundland to Nova Scotia. The riding was newly created for the 2015 election, largely succeeding the former Humber—St. Barbe—Baie Verte riding held since 1996 by Liberal MP Gerry Byrne, who did not re-offer federally in order to enter provincial politics.
