Saskatoon Meewasin

Saskatoon Meewasin was the most high-profile race of the 2020 Saskatchewan election. The riding was the seat of NDP Leader Ryan Meili, who had won it in a March 2017 by-election following the death of Saskatchewan Party MLA Roger Parent. Meili won the NDP leadership in March 2018 on his third attempt and was heading into his first general election as party leader. A loss in his own riding would have been devastating for the NDP's credibility, and the Saskatchewan Party targeted the seat aggressively, nominating Rylund Hunter, a young lawyer with deep community ties. The race would become one of the closest contests in the province, its outcome uncertain for days after election night as mail-in ballots were counted during the pandemic.

The riding includes the University of Saskatchewan campus and surrounding neighbourhoods along the South Saskatchewan River, giving it a younger, more educated demographic profile that could swing between the two major parties.

Candidates

Ryan Meili (NDP) — A family physician born in Moose Jaw who grew up on a farm near Courval, Meili graduated from the University of Saskatchewan's College of Medicine in 2004 and completed his residency in Saskatoon. He practised at the West Side Community Clinic and became known for his advocacy on the social determinants of health, founding initiatives including the Student Wellness Initiative Toward Community Health (SWITCH) and the Upstream think tank. He became NDP leader in March 2018.

Rylund Hunter (Saskatchewan Party) — Hunter was a corporate commercial and real estate lawyer at McDougall Gauley LLP in Saskatoon. A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan College of Law, he was a former U of S Huskies football player and was active in community organizations, serving as board chair of the Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation, Autism Services of Saskatoon, and Saskatoon Minor Football.

Jacklin Andrews (Green Party) received approximately two and a half per cent of the vote.

Local Issues

The COVID-19 pandemic dominated the 2020 campaign and carried particular weight in Saskatoon Meewasin, where the opposition leader was a practising physician. Meili argued that the Saskatchewan Party had underfunded healthcare and was ill-prepared for the pandemic, while the government countered that its response had been measured and responsible. The election was held during a period of relatively low case counts in Saskatchewan, but concerns about a potential second wave loomed large. Meili's medical credentials gave him a platform to challenge the government's public health record with clinical authority.

The contest was extraordinarily tight. On election night, Hunter led Meili by 83 votes, and with 1,656 mail-in ballot applications in the riding, the result was declared too close to call. The unprecedented volume of pandemic-era mail-in voting meant the final count stretched over days. Hunter conceded on the Thursday after the Monday election, calling Meili to congratulate him. The final margin was narrow, underscoring how competitive the riding had become.

Beyond the pandemic, education funding and support for the university community were important local themes. Residents near the U of S campus were attentive to provincial funding decisions affecting the institution, while families in the riding shared the broader Saskatoon concern about classroom conditions and staffing levels. The NDP's promise to invest heavily in education resonated in a constituency where many voters worked in academia or the public sector.
