Edmonton-North West

Edmonton-North West takes in a broad arc of communities in Edmonton's northwest quadrant, from the older residential streets of Lauderdale and Rosslyn to the redeveloped Canadian Forces Base Edmonton lands at Griesbach and the suburban edge near the St. Albert border. The riding includes Kensington, Caernarvon, Baranow, Cumberland, Oxford, Carlton, and The Palisades, producing a constituency that blends mid-century working-class housing with newer planned communities. David Eggen, one of the longest-serving NDP MLAs in Alberta, had represented the area since 2004 (under the former Edmonton-Calder name) with only a single interruption. As Education Minister in the Notley government, he was one of the NDP's most prominent cabinet members. He entered 2023 seeking re-election for the second time under the Edmonton-North West boundary configuration.

Candidates

David Eggen (NDP) — A University of Alberta-educated teacher who spent three years teaching in Zimbabwe before returning to Edmonton schools from 1990 to 2004, Eggen has been an MLA since 2004 with a brief interruption from 2008 to 2012, during which he served as executive director of Friends of Medicare. As Education Minister from 2015 to 2019, he oversaw the building and modernization of 244 schools across Alberta and led curriculum development. In opposition, he served as caucus chair and critic for advanced education.

Ali Haymour (United Conservative) — Born and raised in the Edmonton-North West constituency, Haymour is a community volunteer who chose the riding to raise his family. He previously ran as an Alberta Party candidate in Edmonton-Decore in 2019 before joining the UCP. He campaigned on community safety, fiscal responsibility, and local infrastructure improvements.

Tyler Beaulac (Green Party) — Beaulac ran as the Green Party candidate in the riding, representing the party's platform on environmental sustainability and climate policy.

Local Issues

Education policy remained a touchstone in a riding represented by a former Education Minister. The UCP government's K-6 curriculum, which was mandated for partial implementation beginning in September 2022 despite opposition from the majority of school boards, was a significant concern for parents and educators in the riding. Many residents in Edmonton-North West had connections to the education sector, and the debates over curriculum content, consultation processes, and the relationship between the government and school boards resonated locally.

The Griesbach community, built on the former Canadian Forces Base Edmonton lands, continued its residential and commercial build-out, bringing younger families and increasing demand for schools, parks, and transit. Meanwhile, older communities like Lauderdale and Rosslyn faced infrastructure renewal needs typical of Edmonton's mid-century neighbourhoods — aging pipes, crumbling sidewalks, and roads in need of resurfacing. The contrast between investment flowing into new developments and deferred maintenance in established areas was a recurring theme.

Healthcare access and the future of public health services drew attention from a constituency whose representative had led Friends of Medicare. The UCP government's changes to Alberta Health Services, the departure of physicians from the province during a dispute over fee schedules in 2020, and emergency department overcrowding were issues that connected to Eggen's long advocacy for the public healthcare system. Transit infrastructure — particularly the question of when and whether a north LRT line might extend service toward the riding's communities — remained a point of interest for commuters dependent on bus connections along major corridors.
