Strathcona—Sherwood Park covers the southern portion of Strathcona County, including parts of Sherwood Park and the surrounding rural area. The riding sits adjacent to Alberta's Industrial Heartland, the largest hydrocarbon processing cluster in Canada. The incumbent NDP MLA, Estefania Cortes-Vargas—who had unseated PC veteran Dave Quest in the 2015 orange wave—announced on January 21, 2019, that they would not seek re-election, leaving the seat open. The 2019 race drew seven candidates, including Quest himself, who returned to run under the Alberta Party banner rather than joining the United Conservative Party.
Candidates
Nate Glubish (United Conservative) — Born in Edmonton and raised in Saskatoon, Glubish earned a bachelor of commerce degree in finance from the University of Saskatchewan before returning to the Edmonton area in 2004. He spent 15 years in venture capital and corporate finance, beginning with Foundation Equity, where over eight years he rose to partner and participated in over $40 million in technology investments. He then spent four years at the Edmonton head office of NCSG Crane and Heavy Haul Services managing mergers and acquisitions, and most recently worked for Vancouver-based Yaletown Partners, a venture capital fund where he oversaw investments in Alberta technology companies.
Moira Vane (NDP) — A crown prosecutor with 14 years of experience working for both provincial and federal governments. Born in Yellowknife, Vane had worked in the Sherwood Park area since 2005. She was endorsed by the outgoing MLA Cortes-Vargas.
Dave Quest (Alberta Party) — A 39-year resident of Strathcona County who served as the PC MLA for the riding from 2008 to 2015, including a stint as associate minister of seniors under Premier Alison Redford in 2013. A NAIT business administration diploma graduate, Quest had owned and operated businesses ranging from General Motors dealerships to food franchises and held a commercial real estate licence. He chose not to join the UCP, running instead under the Alberta Party banner.
Don Melanson (Alberta Advantage) — The Alberta Advantage Party candidate in the riding.
Albert Aris (Green Party) — The Green Party candidate in the riding.
Richard Scinta (Alberta Independence) — The Alberta Independence Party candidate in the riding.
Larry Maclise (Independent) — An independent candidate in the riding.
Local Issues
The adequacy of healthcare services at Strathcona Community Hospital remained a top-of-mind issue. The facility, which opened in 2014 at a cost of $130 million, operated with only 27 beds and sufficient infrastructure for 36 additional beds in the future. Residents and local advocates pressed for expanded overnight and inpatient capacity, arguing that a community of Sherwood Park's size warranted a full-service hospital rather than a facility that required patients to travel to Edmonton for many procedures.
The energy sector's health was deeply personal in Strathcona—Sherwood Park. The riding's proximity to Refinery Row—home to major operations by Imperial Oil and Suncor—meant that pipeline capacity, regulatory uncertainty, and the provincial carbon tax were everyday kitchen-table topics. Many residents worked in the petrochemical or oil and gas industries and followed the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion debate closely, viewing it as directly linked to local employment and investment.
Municipal infrastructure and growth management also featured in the campaign. Strathcona County was balancing suburban residential expansion with the need to maintain roads, recreational facilities, and emergency services across a large geographic area that includes both the urban centre of Sherwood Park and a sprawling rural hinterland of acreages and hamlets.
