Calgary-East

Calgary-East is a provincial electoral district in the eastern part of Calgary, encompassing the neighbourhoods of Abbeydale, Dover, Erin Woods, Forest Lawn, Marlborough Park, Penbrooke Meadows, Red Carpet, and parts of the surrounding industrial areas. The riding is one of the most diverse in the province, with significant South Asian, Filipino, and East African communities. The 2017 boundary redistribution added the Abbeydale community from Calgary-Cross while moving parts of Marlborough into the neighbouring riding. Calgary-East did not have a sitting MLA heading into 2019, as the previous district boundaries had been substantially redrawn.

Candidates

Peter Singh (United Conservative) — Born in Fiji, Singh owned and operated a small automotive repair business in Calgary for more than 20 years. He speaks Hindi fluently and served as president and vice-president of the Fiji Canada Association between 2007 and 2008. During the campaign, his business premises were searched by RCMP in connection with an investigation into allegations related to the UCP's 2017 leadership race, though an internal party investigation cleared him of wrongdoing.

Cesar Cala (NDP) — Originally from the Philippines, Cala moved to Calgary with his wife in 1996 and became a prominent community builder. He worked as a special advisor for the Government of Alberta on community engagement and had previously worked for the United Way of Calgary and the Calgary Foundation. He co-founded several community-serving organizations, including the Sunrise Community Link Resource Centre and the Ethno-Cultural Council of Calgary.

Gar Gar (Alberta Party) — Gar ran as the Alberta Party candidate in Calgary-East.

Local Issues

Calgary-East's communities — particularly Forest Lawn, Dover, and Penbrooke Meadows — were among the city's more economically challenged neighbourhoods. Affordable housing, poverty reduction, and access to social services were persistent issues. The riding had a higher proportion of renters and lower median household incomes than the Calgary average. Community organizations provided essential settlement services for newcomers, and provincial funding for these programs was a practical concern for residents.

School capacity and language supports were pressing issues. Many schools in the area served large newcomer populations requiring English-language learning supports. The Calgary Board of Education's broader overcrowding challenge was felt acutely in the east, where older schools were at or above capacity and modular classrooms were a familiar sight. Parents advocated for new school construction and expanded programming.

Public safety and community revitalization were also campaign topics. Forest Lawn had long grappled with its reputation, and residents pushed for more investment in community infrastructure, recreation facilities, and policing. The area's proximity to industrial lands and major transportation corridors added concerns about traffic safety and environmental quality. Meanwhile, the carbon tax and energy-sector downturn were relevant to the many tradespeople and small-business owners living in the riding who had experienced the economic fallout from the oil price collapse.
