Edmonton-North West

Edmonton-North West is a provincial electoral district in northwest Edmonton that was drawn as a new riding for the 2019 election through the 2017 boundary redistribution. It encompasses the neighbourhoods of Lauderdale, Rosslyn, Kensington, Griesbach, Caernarvon, Baranow, Cumberland, Oxford, Carlton, The Palisades, and areas west of 142 Street and north of 137 Avenue extending to the St. Albert border. The riding effectively replaced the former Edmonton-Calder, which David Eggen had represented since winning it in 2004. Eggen, one of the NDP's most experienced MLAs, served as Minister of Education and Minister of Culture and Tourism in the Notley government and was seeking re-election in the newly configured riding.

Candidates

David Eggen (NDP) — Eggen was educated at the University of Alberta, earning a bachelor of education in 1984. He taught for 20 years, including three years in Zimbabwe before returning to Edmonton to teach at local schools from 1990 to 2004. After losing his Edmonton-Calder seat in 2008, he served as executive director of Friends of Medicare from 2008 to 2012 before winning the seat back. As Minister of Education from 2015 onward, he oversaw the building and modernization of 244 schools across Alberta and led the development of an updated provincial curriculum.

Ali Eltayeb (United Conservative) — Eltayeb ran as the UCP candidate in the riding, seeking to take the seat from the high-profile NDP cabinet minister.

Judy Kim-Meneen (Alberta Party) — Kim-Meneen ran as the Alberta Party candidate in the riding under leader Stephen Mandel.

Brandon Teixeira (Liberal) — Teixeira ran as the Liberal candidate in the riding.

Tim Shanks (Alberta Independence) — Shanks ran as the Alberta Independence Party's candidate in the riding.

Luke Burns (Alberta Advantage) — Burns ran as the Alberta Advantage Party's candidate in the riding.

Local Issues

Education policy was a natural focal point in a riding represented by the province's Education Minister. Eggen's tenure saw the launch of an ambitious school capital program that funded the building and modernization of 244 schools across Alberta. The updated curriculum Eggen championed drew both support from educators who favoured a more inclusive and modernized approach and criticism from parents and opposition MLAs who questioned its content and consultation process.

The northwest Edmonton neighbourhoods in the riding included a mix of older established communities like Lauderdale and Rosslyn, which faced typical mature-neighbourhood concerns around infrastructure renewal, and newer areas near The Palisades and the redeveloping former Canadian Forces Base Edmonton lands at Griesbach. The Griesbach development, a planned community built on the former military base, brought new residential and commercial construction to the riding's western edge, adding younger families and placing additional demand on schools, parks, and community services.

Transit and transportation infrastructure were local concerns. Residents in the riding's northwestern communities relied on bus connections along major corridors, and the broader debate over the future extension of Edmonton's LRT network — including questions about the proposed north LRT line — attracted interest from commuters who depended on public transit to reach downtown and other employment centres. The NDP government's role in funding transit infrastructure at the provincial level was part of the local conversation about connecting northwest Edmonton to the city's evolving rapid transit network.
