Edmonton-Castle Downs

Edmonton-Castle Downs is a provincial electoral district in Edmonton's northwest, covering the residential neighbourhoods of Baturyn, Beaumaris, Caernarvon, Carlisle, Chambery, Dunluce, Elsinore, Lorelei, and Rapperswill. These communities form the Castle Downs area, a cluster of family-oriented suburbs developed primarily from the 1970s through the 1990s. The riding is characterized by single-family homes, parks, and local schools, with many residents commuting to employment centres in central Edmonton and the surrounding industrial areas. NDP MLA Nicole Goehring won the seat in 2015, defeating four-term Progressive Conservative MLA and former deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk with 64.5 per cent of the vote.

Candidates

Nicole Goehring (NDP) --- With a social work diploma from Grant MacEwan Community College, Goehring devoted nearly a decade to Child and Family Services in Edmonton prior to her entry into politics. She co-developed a mediation program and manual aimed at giving Edmonton youth a second chance, partnering with school counsellors and police officers to address youth-related situations in schools and communities. In the legislature, she took on the role of Government of Alberta Liaison to the Canadian Armed Forces.

Ed Ammar (United Conservative) --- Ammar is a real estate agent and long-time resident of Edmonton-Castle Downs. He served as the first chair of the UCP interim board after the party's formation in 2017. He had previously run as a Liberal candidate in Edmonton-Decore in 2012 and served as president of the Wildrose Party association in Edmonton-Castle Downs.

Moe Rahall (Alberta Party) --- Rahall ran as the Alberta Party candidate in this riding.

Todd Wayne (Alberta Independence) --- Wayne ran as the Alberta Independence Party candidate in Edmonton-Castle Downs.

Thomas Deak (Liberal) --- Deak ran as the Alberta Liberal Party candidate in this riding.

Local Issues

School infrastructure was a pressing concern in Castle Downs. The area's schools, built decades earlier to serve the original wave of suburban development, faced enrolment pressures and aging facilities. Families in the area had long advocated for a new high school in the Castle Downs-Dunluce area to reduce overcrowding and long commute times for students attending schools in other parts of the city. The NDP government funded school construction projects across Edmonton, but the pace of approvals remained a source of frustration for some Castle Downs families.

Transit connectivity was another local priority. The Castle Downs Transit Centre was undergoing improvements as part of a citywide transit centre upgrade project. Residents relied on bus routes to connect to Edmonton's LRT system, and the proposed Metro Line NW LRT extension, which would run through or near the Castle Downs area, was a long-term infrastructure promise that generated both interest and uncertainty about timelines and community impacts.

Goehring's role as the government's liaison to the Canadian Armed Forces had local significance, as the Griesbach neighbourhood --- a redeveloped former military base adjacent to Castle Downs --- housed a significant community of veterans and military families. Issues related to veteran support services, the transition to civilian life, and the ongoing development of the Griesbach community were matters that resonated in this part of Edmonton. The broader provincial debates over the economy, the carbon tax, and pipeline politics also shaped the conversation in Castle Downs, where many residents worked in sectors affected by the oil price downturn.
