Calgary—Fish Creek is a provincial electoral district in south Calgary, anchored by the sprawling Fish Creek Provincial Park that gives the riding its name. The district encompasses established lake communities including Lake Bonavista, Midnapore, Sundance, Canyon Meadows, Queensland, Deer Run, and Deer Ridge — largely mature, middle-to-upper-income neighbourhoods built between the 1960s and 1990s. Heading into the 2019 election, incumbent MLA Richard Gotfried sought re-election under the United Conservative Party banner. Gotfried had won the seat in 2015 as the sole newly elected Progressive Conservative MLA in the province, prevailing by just 129 votes over the NDP candidate in a riding that had been held by the Wildrose Party's Heather Forsyth.
Candidates
Richard Gotfried (United Conservative) --- After two decades in senior local management with Cathay Pacific Airways, the Hong Kong-based carrier, Gotfried transitioned to a senior executive role with The Trico Group of Companies, a Calgary land developer and residential construction firm. His community involvement included co-founding Alberta's first dragon boat racing festival in 1992 and serving as vice-president of corporate and community engagement with Calgary Economic Development. A long-established figure in south Calgary, Gotfried was first elected to the legislature in 2015.
Rebecca Bounsall (NDP) — A tech start-up builder who had lived in Alberta for over 30 years, Bounsall resided in the Sundance neighbourhood. She volunteered at the Calgary Food Bank, where she witnessed the effects of the affordability challenges facing local families.
Robert Tremblay (Alberta Party) — Tremblay carried the Alberta Party banner in Calgary—Fish Creek, running on the party's centrist platform under leader Stephen Mandel.
Local Issues
Fish Creek Provincial Park, one of the largest urban parks in Canada, remained central to community life in the riding. Recovery from the devastating 2013 floods had required roughly $16 million in infrastructure repairs within the park alone, including the restoration of 15 bridges and five day-use areas. By 2018, much of that work had been completed, but ongoing maintenance of trails and pathway connections continued to concern residents who relied on the park for recreation and commuting.
The riding's mature communities faced the typical pressures of aging suburbs. Many neighbourhoods built in the 1970s and 1980s were dealing with infrastructure renewal needs, from water and sewer lines to community recreation facilities. Canyon Meadows residents saw the local aquatic and fitness centre undergo a two-year expansion and renovation, reopening in spring 2019. Meanwhile, the proposed Green Line LRT, which would extend transit service into south Calgary, generated both anticipation and concern among residents about potential impacts on traffic, property values, and community character.
The broader economic downturn that hit Calgary after 2014 was felt keenly in this riding. The oil price collapse cost the city tens of thousands of jobs in construction, mining, oil and gas, and professional services. Many residents in these established communities worked in the energy sector, and the carbon tax introduced by the NDP government in January 2017 became a significant point of contention. By 2019, the economic frustrations that had built over four years of recession and slow recovery shaped the political mood across south Calgary.
