Leduc-Beaumont

Leduc-Beaumont was located immediately south of Edmonton, straddling Highway 2 along the Edmonton-Calgary corridor. The riding included the city of Leduc, famous as the site of the 1947 oil discovery that launched Alberta's petroleum era, the rapidly growing city of Beaumont, and the Edmonton International Airport. Both Leduc and Beaumont had experienced explosive population growth: Beaumont's population surged by 31 percent between 2011 and 2016, while Leduc grew by over 23 percent in the same period. The incumbent was George Rogers of the Progressive Conservatives, a former mayor of Leduc who had represented the area since 2004 and served as Deputy Speaker of the Legislature.

George Rogers (Progressive Conservative) — The sitting MLA since 2004, Rogers was a former mayor of Leduc who had been appointed to the Treasury Board in 2006. He served as Deputy Speaker and Chair of Committees from 2012 onward. His long tenure made him a well-known figure in the riding.

Local Issues

The explosive growth of Leduc and Beaumont was both an asset and a challenge heading into 2015. Schools were struggling to keep pace with the influx of young families, and both municipalities pushed for provincial support for infrastructure to match their rapid expansion. Road congestion along Highway 2 and local routes worsened as commuter traffic grew, and both cities needed support for water, sewer, and recreation facilities.

The Alberta Aerotropolis initiative, launched in 2014, envisioned an integrated economic zone around Edmonton International Airport that would attract logistics, manufacturing, and trade businesses. Port Alberta, located within the riding, was pursuing free trade zone designation. These plans represented an opportunity for economic diversification at a time when the oil price collapse was hammering the broader Alberta economy. Many riding residents worked directly or indirectly in the oil and gas sector, and the downturn brought job losses and anxiety even in this relatively diversified suburban area. Voters weighed the promise of airport-driven growth against the immediate pain of the energy slump.
