Edmonton-Mill Woods is a provincial riding in southeast Edmonton encompassing the diverse Mill Woods district, one of the most multicultural communities in western Canada. Developed beginning in the 1970s as an experimental housing project, Mill Woods grew into a sprawling residential area of over two dozen neighbourhoods, home to immigrants and refugees from many countries. The riding includes the Grey Nuns Community Hospital, Mill Woods Town Centre mall, and the Edmonton Police Service's southeast division headquarters. Heading into the 2015 election, incumbent Progressive Conservative MLA Sohail Quadri faced a restless electorate shaken by the late-2014 oil price crash, Premier Jim Prentice's unpopular budget, and the dramatic Wildrose floor crossing that had undermined trust in the province's established conservative parties. The NDP under new leader Rachel Notley was surging in polls across Edmonton.

Local Issues
The oil price collapse that began in late 2014, when prices fell from over $100 US per barrel to below $50, cast a long shadow over the riding. While Edmonton's more diversified economy buffered it somewhat compared to Calgary, residents in Mill Woods felt the economic anxiety through rising unemployment and stalled household incomes. Premier Prentice's spring 2015 budget, which introduced new personal income tax brackets and a health care contribution levy while leaving corporate taxes unchanged, drew criticism from residents who felt ordinary Albertans were being asked to bear the burden of the downturn.
Transit and infrastructure were persistent concerns in this fast-growing area of southeast Edmonton. The Valley Line LRT extension to Mill Woods was in its planning and procurement phase by early 2015, with the TransEd consortium announced as the successful contractor that year. Residents were eager for improved rapid transit connections to downtown and the university area. The Grey Nuns Community Hospital, the primary acute care facility serving the riding, faced pressure from growing demand in south Edmonton, with emergency wait times a recurring concern.
The multicultural character of Mill Woods also brought attention to settlement services, language training, and culturally responsive health care. Community organizations advocated for improved provincial funding for newcomer integration, while school capacity in the rapidly developing southern neighbourhoods remained a pressing issue for families in the riding.
