Calgary-Mackay-Nose Hill was a sprawling, oddly shaped riding in north-central Calgary created in the 2010 boundary redistribution by merging the former ridings of Calgary-Mackay and Calgary-Nose Hill along with a portion of Calgary-McCall. The riding surrounded the newer riding of Calgary-Northern Hills and included the communities of Huntington Hills, Beddington Heights, Sandstone Valley, MacEwan Glen, and Evanston. Its boundaries ran from the city limits in the north, south to McKnight Boulevard and John Laurie Boulevard, and included a mix of older mid-century suburbs and newer developments at the city's northern edge. Incumbent PC MLA Neil Brown, who had been the first member elected for the new riding in 2012, was seeking re-election.

Mcpherson (NDP) — Mcpherson had worked in the energy industry for over twenty years, beginning as a receptionist at a small oil and gas company and building a career in information technology that took her to the United Kingdom and the United States. Kathy Macdonald (Wildrose) — Macdonald was a retired Calgary police officer who had previously run as the Wildrose candidate in the 2014 Calgary-Foothills by-election.
Neil Brown (Progressive Conservative)* — Brown held a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Calgary, a Master of Science in zoology from the University of Alaska, a PhD in biology from McGill University, and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Calgary. He had worked as an assistant professor of biology at Trent University before pursuing a career in law. He was first elected in 2012 and held the designation of Queen's Counsel.
Local Issues
Calgary-Mackay-Nose Hill straddled two very different types of communities. The older suburbs of Huntington Hills and Beddington Heights, built in the 1960s and 1970s, faced the challenges of aging infrastructure, including deteriorating roads, older schools in need of renovation, and community facilities that required investment. In contrast, Evanston at the riding's northern edge was a rapidly growing new community where residents wanted new schools, parks, and commercial amenities to keep pace with development.
The oil price crash affected households across the riding, from professionals in the energy sector to workers in support industries. The economic downturn intensified concerns about provincial spending priorities, and residents questioned whether the Prentice government's budget, with its tax increases on individuals, was the right response to the fiscal crisis. Transit was a significant issue, as the riding's dispersed geography and distance from LRT lines meant most residents depended on buses and private vehicles. Nose Hill Park, one of Calgary's iconic natural areas, bordered the riding to the west, and its preservation and management were important to local residents. Health-care access was another concern, particularly for the riding's older populations in communities like Huntington Hills, where wait times and access to family physicians were ongoing frustrations.
