Calgary-Klein

Calgary-Klein is a provincial riding in the north-central part of Calgary, named after former Premier Ralph Klein. Created in the 2010 boundary redistribution primarily from the former riding of Calgary-North Hill and a portion of Calgary-Nose Hill, it covers older inner-city and mid-century suburban neighbourhoods including Highland Park, Thorncliffe, Greenview, Tuxedo Park, Crescent Heights, and Winston Heights-Mountview. The area is more urban and socioeconomically diverse than many of Calgary's outer suburban ridings. Incumbent PC MLA Kyle Fawcett, who had first won the predecessor riding of Calgary-North Hill in 2008, was seeking re-election after serving in cabinet.

Candidates

Craig Coolahan (NDP) — Coolahan had extensive experience in contract negotiations and worker representation as a business agent for the United Utility Workers' Association. He had previously run for the Alberta NDP in the 2012 provincial election in the riding of Calgary-Elbow, where he lost to then-Premier Alison Redford. He returned in 2015 to contest Calgary-Klein.

Kyle Fawcett (Progressive Conservative)* — Fawcett earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Calgary in 2002, studying political science and economics. Before entering the legislature, he worked as a research consultant for private industry and non-profit organizations and served as a public school board trustee with the Calgary Board of Education. First elected in Calgary-North Hill in 2008, he was re-elected in 2012 and appointed Associate Minister of Finance and Vice Chair of Treasury Board. In September 2014, he was appointed Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development in the Prentice cabinet.

Jeremy Nixon (Wildrose) — Nixon was the Wildrose candidate in the riding, seeking to attract right-of-centre voters dissatisfied with the PC government's handling of the fiscal crisis.

Local Issues

Calgary-Klein's older neighbourhoods brought a different set of concerns than the city's rapidly expanding outer suburbs. Aging housing stock, infrastructure renewal, and the pressures of inner-city densification were central issues. Communities like Highland Park and Tuxedo Park were experiencing increased development pressure as Calgary's population grew and inner-city land became more valuable, and residents debated the balance between maintaining neighbourhood character and accommodating growth.

The oil price downturn affected Calgary-Klein's residents across a wide economic spectrum, from energy-sector professionals to workers in the trades and service industries that supported the broader economy. The riding's socioeconomic diversity meant that the impacts of the recession and the Prentice budget's tax increases were felt unevenly, with lower-income households in some communities facing particular strain from the new health-care levy and higher fuel costs. Education was a significant issue, with older schools in the riding requiring capital investment, and parents concerned about the quality and funding of public education. Transit access was relatively better in this more central riding, but residents still pushed for improvements to bus service and connections to the city's expanding LRT network.
