Parkland is a newly created federal riding in central Alberta, established through the 2022 redistribution and centred on the western exurbs of Edmonton. The riding encompasses all of Parkland County—including the city of Spruce Grove, the town of Stony Plain, and the hamlet of Spring Lake—as well as Brazeau County, which includes Drayton Valley and Breton; the eastern portion of Yellowhead County around Chip Lake; and parts of Lac Ste. Anne County around Mayerthorpe. Spruce Grove, with a population of nearly 38,000, is the riding's largest community.
Candidates
Dane Lloyd (Conservative) is the incumbent, first elected in a 2017 by-election following the resignation of Rona Ambrose in the former Sturgeon River—Parkland riding. Born in St. Albert and raised near Spruce Grove on the family farm, Lloyd graduated from Edmonton Christian High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science from Trinity Western University. Before entering politics, he worked as a special assistant to the Minister of International Trade and as a parliamentary advisor to MP Michael Cooper. He continues to serve as a Canadian Army reservist, holding the rank of captain as an infantry officer in the Governor General's Foot Guards.
Ashley Fearnall (Liberal) was raised in rural Ontario and moved to Alberta after marrying a farmer. A 2017 graduate of Trent University with a Bachelor of Arts in political studies, she previously worked as an intern in the Office of the Minister for the Status of Women and served as Director of Human Resources and Training at the Liberal Research Bureau.
Keri Goad (NDP) ran as the party's candidate in the riding, campaigning in the Stony Plain and Spruce Grove areas.
Jason Lavigne (People's Party), Daniel Birrell (Green Party), Wade Klassen (United Party of Canada), and Kevin Schulthies (Christian Heritage Party) also stood as candidates in the riding.
About the Riding
Parkland's character reflects the tension between Edmonton's outward suburban growth and Alberta's rural and resource economy. Spruce Grove and Stony Plain, just 11 kilometres west of Edmonton's city limits along Highway 16, have transformed over the past two decades from small agricultural towns into bustling commuter communities. Many residents work in Edmonton but choose the smaller-city lifestyle, lower housing costs, and proximity to the countryside. Parkland County's acreages and hamlets surround the two centres, while recreational communities along Wabamun Lake and Jackfish Lake draw weekend visitors.
Drayton Valley, in the riding's southwestern corner, is a resource town whose economy rises and falls with oil and gas activity. The community experienced significant hardship during the 2014–2016 oil price downturn and has worked to diversify its economic base. Agriculture—grain farming, cattle, and mixed operations—remains important across the riding's rural areas, particularly in Brazeau County and around Mayerthorpe.
In 2025, Parkland's newly drawn boundaries brought together suburban commuters and rural resource workers under one riding for the first time. Highway congestion on the commute into Edmonton, healthcare access—particularly the shortage of family physicians in Spruce Grove and Stony Plain—and school capacity in fast-growing neighbourhoods were top suburban concerns. In the rural portions, oil and gas market uncertainty, agricultural trade disruption from the US tariff dispute, and the viability of small-town services shaped the political conversation.
