Oakville West

Oakville West is a newly created federal riding comprising the western half of the Town of Oakville in the Halton Region, established through the 2022 redistribution that divided the former Oakville riding along Sixteen Mile Creek. The riding includes the established communities of Bronte, Glen Abbey, Palermo, Kerr Village, and Old Oakville's western neighbourhoods, stretching from the creek to the town's western boundary with Burlington. With its mix of lakeside heritage properties, mature suburban subdivisions, and newer developments in the northwest, Oakville West is a predominantly affluent, family-oriented riding with a strong professional and commuter economy.

Candidates

Sima Acan (Liberal) is an engineering businesswoman and community advocate who owns a local robotics company. She has deep roots in Oakville's volunteer community, having served as president of the Oakville Lions Club and contributed to the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and local school councils. Born in Turkey, Acan became the first Canadian of Turkish descent elected to the House of Commons, a historic milestone in the 2025 election. She was acclaimed as the Liberal candidate.

Tim Crowder (Conservative) is a former banking and wealth management executive with international experience in senior roles at TD and HSBC. He has also owned several marketing consulting firms. A resident of Glen Abbey for 20 years, Crowder has been involved in coaching minor sports, leading the parent-teacher association, and serving as a board member of the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Diane Downey (NDP) is a game developer and graduate of Sheridan College and St. Thomas University. She first moved to Oakville in 2016 and has been active with the NDP since 2019, serving on several equity committees. She volunteers at Knox Presbyterian Church school and ran on a platform focused on affordability, housing, and defending Canadian sovereignty against US tariff threats.

Chris Kowalchuk (Green Party) and JD Meaney (People's Party) also stood as candidates in the riding.

About the Riding

Oakville West's character is defined by its lakefront heritage and established suburban prosperity. Bronte, centred on its harbour at the mouth of Bronte Creek, retains a village atmosphere with independent shops and restaurants, while the adjacent Bronte Creek Provincial Park provides green space at the riding's western edge. Glen Abbey, developed around the renowned Glen Abbey Golf Course that hosted the Canadian Open for decades, is one of Oakville's most recognizable neighbourhoods, with large homes and mature tree-lined streets. Kerr Village and the areas near downtown Oakville offer a more walkable, mixed-use environment.

The riding's economy is closely tied to the broader GTA professional and corporate landscape. Many residents commute to Toronto, Mississauga, or Burlington, working in finance, technology, healthcare, and professional services. Sheridan College's Trafalgar Road campus, just outside the riding boundary, contributes to the area's educational and cultural life, including its nationally recognized animation program.

In 2025, Oakville West's inaugural election was shaped by familiar suburban concerns amplified by national uncertainty. Housing affordability, even in a community with above-average household incomes, emerged as a leading issue as home prices and mortgage renewal rates climbed. The US trade dispute generated anxiety among residents whose livelihoods connect to cross-border commerce. Healthcare access, particularly the availability of family physicians, and the management of intensification and development in Oakville's evolving neighbourhoods were persistent topics throughout the campaign.
