Mississauga--Streetsville

Mississauga--Streetsville is centred on the historic villages of Streetsville and Meadowvale in Mississauga's northwest. The riding blends old Ontario charm with modern suburban development -- Streetsville's main street along the Credit River retains its small-town character even as the surrounding neighbourhoods have grown into dense, diverse suburban communities. Liberal incumbent Rechie Valdez won re-election in a competitive contest against veteran municipal politician Sue McFadden, maintaining the Liberal hold on this swing-capable seat.

Candidates

Rechie Valdez (Liberal) -- Born in Zambia to Filipino overseas workers, Valdez immigrated to Canada in 1989 and grew up in Mississauga's Erin Mills neighbourhood. She earned a degree in computer science from the University of Windsor and spent over a decade in corporate banking before becoming an entrepreneur. A published baker who appeared on Food Network Canada's The Big Bake, Valdez co-founded a Filipino fusion pastry line. First elected in 2021, she became the first Filipino Canadian woman to serve as a member of Parliament and was appointed Minister of Small Business in 2023.

Sue McFadden (Conservative) -- A Mississauga Ward 10 councillor since 2006 and former Peel District School Board trustee, McFadden brought more than two decades of municipal experience to the race. A graduate of Sheridan College and Ryerson University, she previously spent seventeen years in senior management at Bell Canada. She is a past president of the Mississauga-Meadowvale Rotary Club and a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Bushra Asghar (NDP) -- Asghar moved to Mississauga from Karachi as a child and studied political science and international relations. An advocate for social justice, she campaigned on housing affordability, youth employment, and climate action.

Chris Hill (Green Party) -- Hill represented the Green Party in the riding, focusing on environmental sustainability and community-driven policy.

Logan Araujo (People's Party - PPC) -- Araujo ran under the People's Party banner, emphasizing fiscal restraint and reduced government intervention.

About the Riding

Streetsville's roots date to 1819, when Timothy Street financed the survey that led to the establishment of mills along the Credit River. The village grew into a commercial hub for the surrounding township, and though it was amalgamated into the City of Mississauga in 1974, it has fiercely maintained its distinct identity. Annual events like the Bread and Honey Festival draw thousands, and the village core along Queen Street South features heritage buildings, independent shops, and restaurants.

The riding is one of Mississauga's most affluent, with above-average household incomes, but it is also ethnically diverse, with significant South Asian, Filipino, Arab, and Chinese communities alongside its longer-established European-origin population. The mix of suburban families, professionals, and small business owners has made it a bellwether for political trends in the 905 belt.

The 2025 race was closely watched as a potential Conservative pickup given McFadden's strong name recognition from nearly two decades on council. However, allegations of irregularities in Conservative nomination processes across Mississauga may have undermined the party's ground game. Valdez held on, and her victory contributed to a Liberal sweep of all six Mississauga ridings.
